    • To support encoding a control circuit determines a primary prediction mode to employ when encoding a block of video data and then determines a corresponding companion prediction mode to correspond to the primary prediction mode. The control circuit can then generate a mixed prediction for the block of video data by mixing a prediction formed using the primary prediction mode with a prediction formed using the companion prediction mode. By one approach the control circuit determines the corresponding companion prediction mode by accessing a companion prediction mode lookup table. In such a case, if desired, upon generating the mixed prediction for the block of video data the control circuit can also automatically update the companion prediction mode lookup table. By one approach a corresponding decoder infers the employed companion prediction mode (or modes).

    • At least one microphone is incorporated in a gaming machine along with voice recognition/analysis software that analyzes the quality of the player's voice to determine the player's age, gender, emotions, and other attributes. Such voice attributes are not direct voice commands by the player, but are voice characteristics that provide information about the player herself. After the player is characterized based on her voice attributes, game software is modified accordingly so that the game is customized for the particular player. For example, the detection that the player is a young woman may cause the game to use a certain theme involving young female characters, trendy modern music, etc. The game also adapts to the detected voiced emotions of the player. Other features of the machine cause there to be verbal interaction between the player and the machine, enhancing the playing experience.

    • A method for correcting long-term phase drift of a crystal oscillator in a numerically- controlled oscillator is described. The method includes determining the phase error in an oscillator signal in comparison with an external time base; delta-sigma modulating the phase error to generate a delta-sigma error bitstream; conditionally adding or subtracting an error correction step size from a phase increment value in each clock cycle based on the delta-sigma error bitstream, to create a modulated phase increment value; and adding the modulated phase increment value to a phase accumulator to generate an error-corrected output digital signal. The delta-sigma-based error correction method avoids the use of multipliers. The same delta-sigma error signal can be used in multiple numerically-controlled oscillators configured to different output frequency if driven by the same reference oscillator.

The methods include context-based coding of a flag that signals if all signs are the same in the block; using a finite state machine to determine contexts for coding of sign information, some of which may be context-based coded and some of which may be non-context-based coded; context-based coding of sign information wherein the context is based upon the signs of neighbouring coefficients; context-based coding of sign information, where the sign information is a prediction of the sign; and using a dedicated context to code signs with a sign flag indicating whether signs in a transform skipping block have been inverted to preserve a dominant sign bias.
