    • 689,650. Drying apparatus. HARRISON, J. Aug. 10, 1951 [Aug. 21, 1950], No. 20677/50. Class 34 (ii) Apparatus for drying grass &c. has a chamber 18 open at the top and horizontal rails 19 on which containers 11, having open work tops and bottoms 16, are supported by central wheel supports 15 to form a ceiling to the chamber 18 so that drying gas ascending from the chamber passes through the grass, the containers 11 being transported along the rails on the wheel 15 and being rotatable about the wheels to reverse the position of the container. Heated air is passed into the chamber 18 through a pipe 22 by a fan 23 via a manifold 24 having control valves 25. In a modified form of chamber, a central partition provides two subchambers having separate supplies of air and in another modification one subchamber has a hood to enable the drying gas to be returned for re-circulation. In a further modification (Fig. 7) a central partition 26 is fixed and a movable partition 32 provides sub-chambers 33, 34. Wet grass is placed above chamber 34 and some of the air from chamber 27 is recirculated through chamber 33, the remainder passing through the wet grass over chamber 34 and thence to the atmosphere. The containers 11 have opposite side walls 12, 1, each provided with a pair or coacting hinged flaps 13, through which the containers are loaded or unloaded. After drying has proceeded for a period the containers are turned over on their wheels 15 to reverse the direction of flow of the heated air through the grass.

    • 642,002. Shoots. ACCURATUS, Ltd., and BOULTON, T. J. H. Jan. 30, 1948, No. 2807. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for performing a cutting or marking operation, such as the slotting of bolt or screw heads, comprises a delivery channel along which the workpieces move and in which they are held against lateral displacement, and discs t and u rotatable in planes transverse to the delivery channel and spaced to receive a single workpiece between them, the discs allowing a workpiece to be admitted between them, held against longitudinal displacement while it is being operated on by cutting or marking means v located between the discs, and then discharged. A bed c is adjustably pivoted at a and carries a spindle f driven through reduction gearing g from a pulley h rotated by a belt or other means. A hopper d is secured to the upper end of the bed and has a movable part o which is actuated by a cam n rotated by the spindle f through a drive i, j and which feeds the workpieces to a channel formed by strips q on the bed. The discs t and u are mounted on the spindle f and a cutter v is centrally disposed between them. The workpieces slide down the channel and one of them passes beneath a bevelled edge w, Fig. 4, formed by a segment removed from the disc t and is arrested by the disc u. During further rotation of the discs, the workpiece is held between them while the cutter forms a slot in the head. Subsequently, an edge y formed by a segment removed from the disc u and disposed at about 90 degrees in advance of the edge w comes into position adjacent the workpiece, Fig. 7, which is discharged by an obliquely-arranged member x on the disc t.

    • 287,697. Harrison, A. J. March 3, 1927. Spectacles; eyeglasses.-Spectacles or eyeglasses of the kind in which the frames or bridge members are provided with extensions carrying pivoted placquet pieces have the placquet pieces constructed with portions bent or formed to engage the extension of the frame. In one example the extension 5 of the frame is flattened and provided with an elliptical hole to receive the bentup ends 10 of projections 9 on the placquets 8. These, after insertion, are bent over to retain the placquets in position, Fig. 4. In another example the end of the frame is bent into the form of a loop which passes through the ends 10 which are then somewhat separated. The end of the loop is riveted over. In a further modification the placquets are provided with a depressed central portion which passes through the hole in the frame and is then expanded to prevent disengagement. Specification 21323/12 is referred to.
