    • The present invention provides a novel die assembly for extruding and drawing ferrous and non-ferrous metal, and also to a method of making the same. The die assembly according to the present invention comprises a die core (3); at least one pre-stressed ring (2) placed around the die core (3); and a die casing (1) surrounding the ring (2), wherein the ring (2) is plastically deformed and hardened by press fitting it to the casing (1) so that the ring has compression stress exceeding its material yield limit by 10-40%, and the mating geometric feature (5) of the core and the ring is tapered towards the exit, to thereby obtain a rigid container system in which a die core can be press fitted with a great force without die cracking. As a result, a long lasting die assembly with surprisingly high performance, small dimension and low production cost is obtained by assembling the die core by a great force without die cracking.

    • A tube is bent having a curved portion with a variable radius extending between first and second ends. The curved portion includes a circular arc portion with a constant radius and a clothoid transition portion with a variable radius. The circular arc portion extends from the first end toward a point of integration. At the point of integration, the circular arc portion merges with the transition portion. The transition portion extends from the point of integration to the second end. As the transition portion extends from the point of integration, its radius of curvature increases over its arc length, thereby, improving the quality of the bent tube by gradually bending the tube over a longer distance, thereby reducing local stresses on the bent portion of the tube.

    • A tube bending apparatus adapted for the noncircular bending of a tube includes a modified bend die, a modified wiper die, a translatable and pivotable element and an actuator. The bend die presents a noncircular bending profile having a linearly or nonlinearly increasing radius of curvature. The wiper die is configured to accommodate the maximum radius presented by the profile, and the element and actuator present an inclined rack and pinion configuration. The bend die presents an involute of a circle having a radius equal to the product of the radius of the pinion and the sine of the angle of inclination, so that the bend die engages the tube at a fixed point in space during bending.

    • An improved telescoping torque transmitting connection and a method for making tubes used in the formation of this connection are disclosed. The tubes are formed with inwardly extending lobes and the lobes are formed so that the wall thickness of the tube in their vicinity is at least as great as it is in the remainder of the tube, whereby the strength of the tube is not reduced by formation of the lobes. The lobes are formed with substantially flat flanks for interaction with the lobes of the mating tube, whereby the contact between the two tubes is made at a plurality of planar surfaces rather than along a plurality of lines so that the end loading developed when the tubes are telescoped with respect to one another under load is not excessive. The method for making the tubes involves drawing a precursor tube to an intermediate precursor having non-uniform wall thickness, in which the wall thickness of the tube is increased in the vicinity of the lobes to be formed, so that the wall thickness of the eventually-formed lobes is at least as great as that of the tube in the areas not having the lobes formed therein.
