    • An extrusion-compression molding process is provided for making optical articles (24) wherein a melt shot (19) of optical polymer extrudate is fed to sequentially moving lower dies (12) of a die set (12 and 21) comprising a lower die (12) and an upper die (21) and then the upper die (21) is positioned on top of the melt shot (19) containing lower die (12) and the die set (12 and 21) is compressed to form the optical article (24). After the optical article (24) is formed, the lower die (12) and the upper die (21) are separated and recycled for forming additional optical articles (24). The optical polymeric material may be in the form of pellets and melted in an extruder (16). A reaction extruder (16) may also be employed where the optical polymeric material is produced in the reaction extruder from monomers. Shuttle carriages (28 a-h) are preferably used to transport the lower dies (12) and die sets (12 and 21) throughout the process. A control system (27) is used to obtain input data and generate output signals to monitor and control the process steps.
