    • An expandable insulation blanket (10) includes a body of insulation material (12) having a first edge (14) and a second edge (16) wherein the first and second edges are opposite one another. A first slit (18) defines a first hinge point (20) between a first end (21) of the first slit and the first edge, a second hinge point (22) between a second end (23) of the first slit and the second edge and a third hinge point (24) between a third end (43) of the first slit and the first edge. A first hinge body (26) is outlined by the first slit, the first hinge point and the third hinge point. A second slit (28) extends across the first hinge body and defines a fourth hinge point (30) between the second slit and the first slit. When expanded the insulation body includes a substantially triangular shaped opening (62).

    • A method of making a high temperature polymer honeycomb structure in which layers of the polymer (12) are placed in a tool (10) with interposed shaped formers (14), heat and pressure sufficient to cause the polymer in different layers to coalesce is applied and the tool cooled. The polymer may be polysulphone, polyethersulphone, polyetherketone, polyetheretherketone, polyetherimide, polyphenelene sulphide, a polyamide or the like; and may be used in pure form or be reinforced with glass, carbon, quartz, boron or other reinforcing fibres. The polymer layers may be un-formed and heated to a temperature at which they are moulded; or the layers may be pre-formed, laid up in the tool with touching surfaces coated with a solution of the polymer material and heated to a temperature at which the touching surfaces fuse. The formers may be hollow tubes and heating effected in an oven, or at least some of the formers may be electrical elements by which heat is applied. Air may be passed through the tubes to heat and cool the polymer. Heat and pressure may be applied sequentially to sections of the laid up polymer and the honeycomb structure made continuously, lengths of the polymer being passed sequentially to the tool in which they are formed into sections of the structure. The cell walls of the honeycomb may be metallised and one or more skins of the same or a different polymer fixed to thereto by painting a surface of the or each skin with a solution of the polymer therein and bringing the painted surface of the skin into contact with the honeycomb with application of heat and pressure. Apparatus for effecting the methods is described.
