    • A steering column for a motor vehicle includes upper steering-column portion, a lower steering-column portion, and a damping body for coupling the upper and lower steering-column portions, with piezoelectric elements being integrated in the damping body. These piezoelectric elements are part of an active system for vibration damping and are provided for compensating vibrations in length direction of the steering column and torsional vibrations in rotational direction of the steering wheel. The active system further includes piezoelectric elements in an attachment zone between the A-pillars and the support beam for compensating vibrations in length direction of the support beam and perpendicular thereto. Thus, the active system for vibration damping thus provides a vibration control in all three directions in space as well as control of torsional vibration.

    • Novel magnetorheological elastomer compositions are provided. The magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) may have aligned or randomly arranged magnetizable particles in a thermoset or thermoplastic matrix. The magnetizable particles may be coated to reduce corrosion and/or improve bonding between the particle and the matrix. The magnetizable particles may be flake-shaped. The MREs may have matrices selected from the group consisting of hydrogenated nitrile rubbers, butyl rubbers, ethylene-propylene copolymers and terpolymers, ethylene-acrylic copolymers, fluorinated elastomers, silphenylene-siloxanes, silarylene-siloxanes, poly(carborane-siloxane-acetylene)s and blends thereof. The MREs may also have matrices selected from the group consisting of styrene-butadiene block copolymers, copolyesters, polyamides, polyether block amides, polyolefin-elastomers other than polyalpha olefins, chlorinated polyethylenes, ionomers, chlorosulfonated polyethylenes, blends thereof, and blends of thermoplastic polyurethane with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylindene fluoride (PVDF), polycarbonate, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

    • An automatically adjustable damping force shock absorber includes an outer cylinder; an inner cylinder provided in the outer cylinder; a piston inserted into the inner cylinder. The piston includes a plunger assembly slidably fitted in the inner cylinder so as to divide the inner cylinder into two compartments and provided with orifices on a side wall thereof, several one way valves on a upper and lower walls thereof and a cylindrical piston rod connected at one end thereof to the plunger assembly, a control valve provided in the plunger assembly for controlling fluid amount passing through the orifices and one way valves of the plunger assembly, and an electric power supplier connected to the control valve by a cable for supplying electric power. The electric power supplier includes an accelerometer for detecting extension and contraction of the shock absorber and responsively producing an acceleration level signal, an amplifier for amplifying the acceleration level signal, and a voltage generator for generating voltage on the basis of the acceleration signal.

    • A valve regulates fluid displacement in a damper assembly, for example, displacement of hydraulic fluid in a sealed shock absorber. The valve is placed between a portion of fluid at one pressure and regulates the passage of fluid through an aperture or passage to a portion of fluid at a lower pressure by a blocking member which moves to obstruct the aperture in accordance with a desired level of damping. The blocking member is, or is driven by, an electroactive device, such as a bimorph actuator formed of ferroelectric material. In one embodiment, the blocking member is a bimorph which covers the aperture, and is flexibly displaced by passage of pressurized fluid through the aperture. A controller provides an electrical actuation signal to move the bimorph toward or away from the aperture, augmenting or decreasing its closing bias to affect both the threshold flow initiation pressure and the rate of flow once the passage opens. Preferably the blocking member is a flexible piezoelectric assembly, which moves across a gap to provide a varying obstruction in the near field of fluid flow as the fluid moves through the passage. Piezobenders, washers and various pinned or cantilevered constructions of electroactive elements are adapted to different passage geometries. The valve assembly may be implemented in a plenum that attaches between chambers of a fluid housing, and include a first passage leading to one side, illustratively the high pressure side, of the damping piston, and a second passage connecting to the other, e.g., low pressure side of the piston. A piezo bender covers an elongated opening between the first and second passages and a controller moves the bender toward or away from the opening to reduce or increase flow. Preferably, a position sensor connected to the controller senses piston position, and the controller operates to energize the bender and to obstruct the opening or to further restrict flow if the piston position or its velocity is determined to lie above a threshold. This extends the useful range of the damper and may allow optimal stroke of the damper during all conditions of use, enhancing comfort while preventing bottoming out.
