    • 489,688. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 31, 1938, No. 3003. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1937. [Class 100 (iv)] Paper-supports; web-cutting arrangements.- In machines comprising a carbon-sheet trolly mounted on a track in connection with the platen-carriage, the platen being displaceable in the carriage to permit stripping of the carbon sheets from the webs, a tearing-knife for the webs is arranged above the printing line and, on release of a latch, can be moved away from the platen to facilitate adjustment of the webs with respect to the platen. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the platen 18 is mounted in arms 17 which are pivoted to brackets 15 on the platen-carriage 12 and engage counterbalancing-springs 25. The platen is held in normal position by means of latches 22 secured to a rod which passes through a tube 19 connecting the arms 17. The latches are released by means of a finger-lever 24. A tearing-knife 44a is secured to a rod 44 connecting arms 45 which can rock on a shaft 37, Fig. 7, on the platen-carriage, and are normally held in contact with stops 45a by springs 45b. Latches 47, pivoted on the arms 45, co-operate with sleeves on the platenshaft 49 to hold the tearing-knife in normal position. When the latches are rocked rearwards, the knife can be drawn forward to afford access to the webs for adjustment. Web-guiding arrangements.-An adjustable stop 118 for gauging the webs when they are drawn forward is mounted on a bar 117 on the type-basket cover 116. When webs having cross-perforations are employed, they are gauged by means of a pair of pins 130, Fig. 10, pivoted to lugs 128a on brackets 128 longitudinally adjustable on a plate 125 which is laterally adjustable on the cover 116. Screws 129, 127 secure the brackets and plate. When the webs have been pulled forward, the leading perforations are slipped over the shouldered tops of the pins and when the platen is lowered, the pins are tilted out of the perforations by the tension of the webs, and are returned to normal position by springs 131. Before the pins leave the perforations, the webs are gripped between the platen and the paper-apron. A web-guiding plate 26 is clamped to the tube 19. Line-spacing mechanism.-A ratchet-wheel on the platen co-operates with a pawl on a slide which is mounted on the platen-carriage 12 and is operated by a lever in connection with the carriage-returning tape 59. When the platen is raised, the ratchet-wheel is separated from the pawl, and a stop limits movement of the pawl. A stop is provided also for the ratchet-wheel detent. A linespacing regulator, mounted on the platencarriage consists of a pawl-stop adjustable by a finger-lever. Carbon-sheet arrangements.-A carbon-sheet trolly 95 is mounted on a track 85, consisting of a plate having cut-outs 85a, by means of grooved rollers 96, the rollers at one side being mounted on a floating, spring-urged carrier 98. The track runs on a rail 84 on a tubular frame 82, and is detachably and resiliently coupled to the platen-carriage 12. For this purpose, the track is provided at each side with a lug 89a arranged between a pair of collars 93, 94 which are loosely mounted on a rod 90 on the platen-carriage and are pressed together by springs 92. Each lug is formed with a circular opening which is open at the bottom and engages a shoulder on the collar 93, the arrangement enabling the lug to be raised when the collars are separated. The frame 82 comprises members 80 having rubber feet 81, and members 75 each having a flat block 78 connected by a pin 79 to a flat block on a screw 77 threaded into the framework 10 of the typewriter. The frame can be detached by springing the members 75, and can be adjusted by turning the screws 77. The trolly is provided with a handle 104, and a detachable bar 106 provided with posts 107 for the carbonblades 108.
