    • A sensor hub (10) for a print ribbon supply roll includes a sleeve (12) shaped to attach to the roll core of the print ribbon supply roll, a pin-receiving plate (14) secured to the sleeve (12) and including a plurality of apertures (16), and a plurality of pins (18) permanently secured in selected ones of the apertures (16). The pins (18) are arranged in the apertures (16) according to a print ribbon type to thereby identify the print ribbon type. The sleeve (12), pin-receiving plate (14) and pins (18) are preferably molded in a single step operation, thereby decreasing manufacturing time and reducing manufacturing costs. By molding the sleeve (12) and pin-receiving plate (14) around the pins (18), the pins (18) can be permanently secured in the apertures (16) of the pin-receiving plate (14), and the mold cavity can be constructed so as to eliminate susceptibility to human error.

    • A printer and method for monitoring consumption of a print ribbon (108) of a thermal printer is provided. A sensor (124) detects an indicator which is indicative of an amount of ribbon initiallly available for printing. The method includes pressing the print ribbon against a medium located on a drawer (102) of the thermal printer using a thermal print head (106) of the thermal printer. The method includes moving the drawer and the print ribbon simultaneously and at substantially the same rate past the thermal print head so as to deposit a transferable coating of the print ribbon on the medium whereby printing an image on the medium. Measuring a distance moved by the drawer while pressing the print ribbon against the medium and equating the distance moved by the drawer to an amount of print ribbon consumed are also included in the method.

    • A printing system includes a controller (126) and a ribbon reading device (132). The controller (126) is configured to control operations of the printing system (100) according to operational parameters. The operational parameters used to control printing of ink from a thermal print ribbon (104) onto one or more target objects (102) by a thermal print head (122). The ribbon reading device (132) is configured to examine the thermal print ribbon (104) as the thermal print ribbon moves in the printing system. The ribbon reading device (132) examines the thermal print ribbon (104) to determine if the thermal print ribbon is associated with a set of designated operational parameters for the printing system. The controller (126) is configured to use the set of designated operational parameters to control the operations of the printing system when the thermal print ribbon (104) is associated with the set of designated operational parameters.
