    • Automatic control of a variable characteristic of glass, such as a window of a building. A standard management routine is established based upon solar load on the glass or solar penetration through the glass. The standard routine may for example be based on a proactive algorithm (i.e. predictive) which models the scheduled sun’s rays on the glass throughout the day. The automatic control overrides the standard routine in response to the presence of at least one of: calculated reflected light on the glass (900, fig 9), calculated shadow on the glass (800, fig 8), the actual thermal load on the glass exceeding a predetermined value, or a calculated thermal load on the glass exceeding a predetermined value 700. The override control may be based on a reactive algorithm (i.e. real-time). The variable characteristic of the glass may be, for example, a shading coefficient, visible light transmission, heat flow or reflectivity. The variable characteristic of the glass may be implemented using switchable, dynamic or smart glass, which may use electrochromic or magnetochromic coatings/layers, or glass having suspended particle coatings/layers, or polymer dispersed liquid crystal coatings/layers. The glass may form part of a window, skylight, door, or animal enclosure.
