    • A method for controlling an amount of material transferred in a system having a plurality of material feeds and concurrent material transfer periods. The method comprising steps of: supplying each of a primary material having a target weight and a secondary material, to a receiving vessel; determining a decision threshold; feeding the primary material to the receiving vessel, feeding the secondary material into the receiving vessel as or after the primary material begins feeding and before the decision threshold, determining a feed status of the primary and secondary materials at the decision threshold; changing the feed status of one of the primary or secondary materials at the decision threshold; and feeding only the primary material within a feed alone time period until the target weight amount is fed.

    • The invention is directed to method and apparatus for wrapping pads. A web of flexible wrapping material is adapted to be pulled in tension over a forming device. The forming device has first and second folding members having angled folding edges adapted for contact by respective opposite side margins of the web as the web is pulled past the folding edges. A web guide guides the web toward the folding edges. An opening between the web guide and the folding edges is adapted to be spanned by a central portion of the web as the web is pulled past the forming device. A series of pads are conveyed by a conveyor, one after another, and placed on the web as it is pulled past the forming device so that the pads move with the web over the opening and past the folding edges of the forming device. A surface applies a force to the pads to force the pads against the central portion of the web as the pads move across said opening. The force is sufficient to cup the web to position the pads for travel past the first and second folding members with concurrent folding of the side margins of the web by respective folding edges to form a tube around the pads.

    • The invention is directed to method and apparatus for blending fibers. In one aspect, the apparatus comprises blending apparatus for blending fibers of different materials, at least one of which is absorbent, and for conveying the blended fibers to a fiber collection station. A first weighing apparatus weighs out a first quantity of first fibers at a first weigh station. A second weighing apparatus weighs out a quantity of second fibers at a second weigh station. The first and second quantities of fibers are conveyed to a blend opener having a beater roll rotatable in the blend opener. The beater roll opens and mixes the fibers. The fibers are entrained in an air stream by a pneumatic conveyor system and conveyed to a fine opener. The fine opener has a rotatable clothing roll to further open and mix the fibers. The pneumatic conveyor system is operable to separate fiber fines from longer fibers and to deliver the longer fibers to said fine opener. The blended fibers can be used for making pads, such as feminine protection pads.

    • A process of determining the rate at which plastic granules are received by an extruder form a feed container having an outlet which opens into the inlet of the extruder, in which process granules are continuously fed to a supply container and consecutive charges of granules are intermittently fed to the feed container, the feed container is weighed before or at the beginning of or after or at the end of its filling operation, the time is measured which between the filling operations is required to withdraw the material in the amount which has been determined by the weighing operations, and the flow rate of the material is calculated from the amounts of material which have been received from the feed container in the measured intervals of time. A uniform feeding of material into the extruder will be ensured if granules and marginal strip material are supplied to the cyclone like container. The supply container is substantially used only as a mixing container and opens into a charge-holding container, which is provided between the supply container and the feed container. The granules of at least one component thereof and recycled marginal strips are continuously fed to the supply container. The feed container and the charge-holding container are weighed in intervals of time, and the feed rate of the granules of the at least one component is correspondingly increased or reduced when the measured total weight of the feed container and of the charge-holding container differs from a predetermined desired weight.
