摘要： In an image forming system, a lifetime management device calculates remaining lifetime of process units, a transfer unit, a secondary transfer unit, a belt cleaning unit and a fixing unit mounted on an image forming apparatus based on an operation amount thereof and a predetermined lifetime index. Based on the remaining lifetime and a predetermined replacement index, the lifetime management device determines whether any unit needs to be replaced, and, if any, transmits a replacement request signal to an external information processor together with a signal indicating remaining lifetime of other units via a communication line.

When a printing device detects an end-of-life condition of a replaceable component in the printing device, a printing device user is prompted to enter information identifying the user and/or the location of the printing device (possibly after accessing a web site). Alternatively, this information may be stored in component memory of a replaceable component where it is obtained by the printing device automatically. An appropriate recycling location is determined from the geographic location of the printer and a shipping label including the address of the recycling location is printed from the printing device.

摘要： An apparatus and method are described for extending the life of a photoreceptor in xerographic printing. At a predetermined point in the life span of a photoreceptor, a correction circuit is interposed between the power supply and the charging device of the printer. Correction circuits of different designs can be selected to compensate for the photoreceptor properties at different stages of its useful life. The different correction circuits can be automatically activated over time, or can be retrofitted into a replaceable module when the replaceable module is remanufactured.

The toner dispenser includes a reservoir of toner material and memory that stores the characteristics and amount of that toner material contained within. A coil resides inside the reservoir to allow the system into which the dispenser is inserted to vibrate the coil. This accomplishes both a churning of the toner, and the back-EMF of the coil can be measured to calculate the amount of toner remaining. The toner dispenser has communications capability that allows it to send the information contained therein to a system processor of the system into which it is inserted.

摘要： A method and system for indicating the type of toner print cartridge which has been loaded into an electrophotographic printer. These include the mounting of a toner-type-indicative conductive strip on the outside surface of a toner print cartridge and then mating this conductive strip with a pair of electrical contacts within the printer housing when a lid or cover carrying the toner print cartridge is closed into the printer housing. Go or no go closed loop control and switching circuitry is connected between the pair of electrical contacts and a formatter within the printer to thereby instruct the printer either to print, or not to print, respectively, depending upon the presence or absence of the conductive strip on the outside surface of the toner print cartridge. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, an extended board connect stage is provided with an electronic (digital) two-position switch which is selectively addressable by a custom personality cartridge. This operation switches the voltage level on a toner cartridge sense line into and out of electrical connection with a formatter of the printer to thereby indicate to the user the type of print cartridge which has been loaded into the printer.

摘要： A counter reset arrangement employed in an image forming apparatus such as a photocopier which is provided with a cartridge removably mounted in a main body of the apparatus and internally accommodating at least a photoreceptor and a cleaning unit integrally, and a resettable counter securely mounted in the main body of the apparatus to detect a remaining service life of the cartridge. The counter reset arrangement further includes a first plate-like member disposed inside the cartridge to bias the reset member towards its second position where the first protruding portion is kept out of contact with the cabinet, so that the reset member is shifted to its second position after the counter has been reset by the second protruding portion through movement of the reset member caused by the cabinet and a second plate-like member also disposed inside the cartridge to bias the reset member against the first plate-like member towards its first position so that the reset member can be returned to the first position.
