Class 141 In forming a multiple-ply collar for shirts &c. at least one of the outside plies 1, 2 is shaped to provide collar top and band portions 5, 6 with an integral additional strip 7 located between the intended foldline edges 8, 9 of these portions, and the strip 7 is folded to form a tuck so that the foldline edges 8, 9 are superposed. In Fig. 8, a tuck is formed in each of the three plies 1-3 so that nine plies of fabric are secured by the foldline seam 14. Alternatively the lining ply need not be folded to form a tuck. In a further embodiment the lining ply comprises separate parts in the top and band portions, and one of the parts contains strands of cellulose acetate so that the band may be stiffened while the collar top remains soft, or vice versa. After stitching the tuck at 13, the inwardly folded parts and the central stitching 12 may be trimmed away. In another embodiment a tuck is formed in only one of the outside plies of a three-ply collar and a stiffening strip is inserted in the tubular channel formed by the tuck.
