    • The invention relates to a fastening element, which can be designed as a blind rivet or screw, and which can be driven into an unpunched workpiece. In the front region intended to be driven into the workpiece, said element contains a punching section (9) which has a cylindrical design and comprises a front end face (5) that runs obliquely to the longitudinal axis. The diameter of the punching section (9) can be smaller than the body of the fastening element, or the diameters can be the same. The intersection of the end face (5) with the outer face of the punching section forms a circumferential edge. Because of the oblique course of the end face, said circumferential edge is arranged such that the circumferential edge strikes the metal first at a front area when the fastening element is driven in. At said front area, the circumferential edge is designed as a cutting edge running in the circumferential direction. Upon impinging on the workpiece, said edge first generates a cut, which thereafter is increased in both circumferential directions.
