    • A golf ball having a smaller and lighter core (10) and metal particles, or other heavy weight filler materials, in the cover (14, 16). Preferably, the particles are included in a relatively thick inner cover layer (or mantle) (14) of a solid, three-piece multi-layered ball. In another preferred version, one or more patterns (32, 42, 52, 62, 72, 82, 92, 104, 116, 118, 122) of weighting material are incorporated in the ball, and most preferably along the outer periphery of the ball so that the pattern (32, 42, 52, 62, 72, 82, 92, 104, 116, 118, 122) is visible along the ball's exterior. The reduced size and weight of the core (10) produces a ball which meets, or is less than, the 1.62 ounce maximum weight limitation specified by the United States Golf Association. The ball has an increased moment of inertia and/or greater radius of gyration and thus generates lower spin. The ball exhibits enhanced distance without substantially affecting its feel and durability characteristics.

    • The invention includes a golf ball having a substantially spherical inner core (100), a first wound layer (105) of high tensile elastic modulus fibers wound about the inner core (100), and a second molded layer (110) of a polymeric material surrounding the wound layer (105), as well as a method of making a golf ball, including providing an inner core (100) winding a high elastic modulus fiber on the inner core (100) to create a first wound layer (105), and molding an outer layer (110) of polymeric material about the first wound layer (105). The inner core (100) in the above method and apparatus may be made of solid resilient materials or a center (115) wound with a low modulus fiber (120) and provided with an initial tension.

    • A golf ball including an improved mantle composition which results in improved performance characteristics. The composition includes a soft, flexible resin, such as an elastomer, and a quantity of at least one hardness-enhancing material, such as a quantity of fibers of fiber segments, such as glass, carbon, aramid, and/or metallic fibers, and, optionally, at least one ionomer. The hardness-enhancing material can constitute about 1 to about 30 wt.% of the intermediate layer. The composition of the intermediate layer enables the golf ball to maintain initial speed and distance of known golf balls, while improving upon spin rate and playability. Alternatively, spin rate and playability can be maintained, while improving upon the initial speed and distance.
