    • A multiple purpose CNC machine that is mountable on a framed, mobile dolly. The machine includes: an open frame base Y-axis (200), a gantry X-axis (300), and a double angle plate (400) that provides mounting surfaces for tooling/instruments such as a Z axis module (500). The double angle plate also allows for mounting of a second Z axis module on the opposite face. The modular Z axis module includes a horizontally rigid counterweight assembly. The counterweight assembly facilitates the adding/subtracting of counterbalancing weights. The Y axis base includes provisions for placement of a tooling plate that is secured on precision machined pads of the Y axis base. The pads also include reference dowel pins. The CNC machine is multiple purpose and can be configured with a high-speed spindle or other material-removing tools, can be used with tooling such as in robotic applications, or can be used with a camera system such as for inspection tasks. The CNC machine can be configured with positioning control motors of either a closed loop servo system or an open loop stepper/linear motor system.

    • A reference plane moving device comprises an attachment section which is movable along a given reference plane, and a balancer which can operate in correspondence with this attachment section, the attachment section including an air intake hole section capable of creating a vacuum condition between the attachment section and the reference plane by sucking air, and compressed air ejecting hole sections capable of creating a high pressure condition between the attachment section and the reference plane by blowing compressed air against the reference plane. By virtue of a combined action of the vacuum and the high pressure conditions thus created, the attachment section can be kept away from the reference plane by a fixed distance while being attracted thereto. The attachment section with an appropriate attachment can be readily moved on the reference plane.

    • A horizontal bed turret lathe including a slant carriage adapted to achieve the advantages of a slant bed configuration while avoiding the disadvantages thereof. The slant carriage is mounted on a pair of horizontal bed ways offset to the rear of the spindle axis, and includes a pair of inclined slide ways for supporting a tool slide. A turret mounted on the tool slide has a pair of toolholders arranged in stacked configuration on the turret axis. For reducing interference from non-working tools and the turret assembly itself, the turret axis is skewed with respect to the spindle axis. To compensate for the skew of the turret axis, the toolholders are frusto-conical in shape, the degree of conical taper allowing each tool to be indexed to a normal operative position. An orderly tool arrangement is achieved by mounting end working tools in the upper toolholder and turning tools in the lower toolholder, the overall configuration allowing both end working and turning tools to operate up to the face of the chuck. Additionally, a tailstock may be conveniently provided on a pair of auxiliary ways, the overall configuration minimizing interference from the tailstock. The slant carriage is further stabilized by folding the slide drive and slide counterbalance assembly back into the carriage thereby lowering its center of gravity.

    • The invention contemplates surface-grinding of a workpiece wherein the surface to be ground is not necessarily flat and wherein a ground surface smoothness is produced with minimum removal of work material; in other words, the adequately smooth ground surface will reflect to some extent any major undulation in the unground surface. To the achievement of this result the grinding tool is fluid-pressure fed to and loaded upon the work surface in such manner as to ''''float'''' upon or self-adapt to profile change in the workpiece. In a horizontal surface grinding embodiment of the machine, a fluid-pressure operated counterbalance effectively offsets the weight of the grinding tool, its drive and its mounting, so that tool-positioning and work-loading portions of the system may function with minimum adverse inertial lag and/or mechanical hysteresis.
