    • Improvements are disclosed for an apparatus for continuously molding small fastener elements integral with a base web from a flowable resin. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical mold roll rotatable about an axis and defining small fastener element-shaped mold cavities in the surface thereof, and pressure-applying means to apply operating pressure to force the resin into the cavities at a pressure zone. The pressure-applying means and mold roll define a mold gap therebetween for forming the base web. The advantageous use of relatively long mold rolls, to produce a correspondingly wide web, and the use of higher molding pressures, e.g. to form very small fastener elements, is enabled by various improvements, including means to maintain the mold gap at a desired thickness profile across the length of the molding region of the mold roll under operating pressure. In some cases the pressure-applying means includes a pressure roll, in other cases it includes a resin nozzle assembly or pressure head. In some other cases it includes a belt. Various control schemes are also disclosed, as are means to provide cooling. In some particularly useful embodiments, at least one of the rolls of the apparatus has a resiliently deformable surface. Methods of molding fastener elements directly on a sheet material, such as sandpaper, are also disclosed, as well as methods for laminating.

    • A lenticular pattern forming roll, used for forming a lenticular screen, includes a chill roll and a lenticular sleeve positioned on the chill roll. The lenticular sleeve has a lenticular pattern formed on an outer surface for forming a corresponding lenticular pattern in a plastic sheet. The sleeve may be readily manufactured and transported to a desired location to be installed on the chill roll. The lenticular pattern forming roll may be readily used in combination with an extruder for extruding a hot plastic sheet to form the lenticular screen. The sleeve may also be removed from the chill roll and transported for resurfacing and without requiring transporting of the chill roll. The lenticular sleeve may preferably comprise a nickel-phosphorous composition defining at least a radially outermost portion of the sleeve in which the lenticular pattern is formed. More particularly, the nickel-phosphorous composition is preferably an amorphous nickel-phosphorous composition comprising nickel in a range of about 75 to 86 percent by weight, and phosphorous in a range of about 14 to 25 percent by weight. The nickel-phosphorous composition may be formed by electrodepositing or electroless depositing. The lenticular sleeve may be slit and flattened to define a flat lenticular body for molding a lenticular screen.

    • A web of plastic material presenting filtering properties comprises a porous layer interconnected with a first non woven layer of plastic fibers.The porous layer is formed by heating another nonwoven of plastic fibers, having a lower plasticizing temperature than the fibers of the first non woven, to at least the plasticizing temperature of the fibers of the other non woven but below the plasticizing temperature of the fibers of the first non woven.The first nonwoven consists of polyester fibers and the other nonwoven, e.g., of polypropylene fibers.An apparatus for manufacturing such a web comprises a central roller, and endless felt band partially slung around said central roller, a heating member and a cooling element.In one embodiment the apparatus comprises a heatable central roller, a second endless metal band engaging a coolable second roller, said heatable central roller and an endless felt band partially surrounding the heatable central roller and a part of the metal band engaging said heatable central roller, non-woven material being passed between said endless metal band and said felt band (FIG. 2).In another embodiment the central roller is a coolable central roller, heating means being accommodated opposite a region of the central roller and a part of the metal band engaging said part of the central roller. The felt band engages the central roller before and after the region opposite the heating means (FIG. 3).
