    • The invention relates to a security element of at least one thin layer element in form of a multi-layer composition, capable of interference. The multi-layer composition, capable of interference, consists of at least one reflecting layer, at least one partially transmitting layer and at least one dielectric layer arranged between these layers.According to the invention the security element comprises in a first region a multitude of gaps in the reflecting layer and in a second region at least one gap or a multitude of gaps in the partially transmitting layer. Herein the second region is arranged at least partially within the first region and the total area of the second region, which is at least partially arranged within the first region, is smaller than the total area of the first region. Therefore the security element displays, when viewed from the partially transmitting layer, a different appearance in top view than in transmission view.

    • A card embodying the invention includes marks which are randomly formed within a dedicated region of the surface of the card. The randomly formed marks may, for example, include; (a) partial-holes extending a short distance from a surface of the card; (b) through-holes extending between the top and bottom surfaces of the card; (c) burn marks, or (d) ink marks. The marks are of a size and nature such that they are not readily visible to the naked eye. The invention includes illumination apparatus for illuminating the card to reliably sense the optical pattern of the randomly formed marks. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a reader/writer includes means for generating an array of light to uniformly illuminate the back surface of the card so as to pass light through the through-holes or through the partial holes. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a reader/writer includes a light source for illuminating the front surface of the card containing the randomly formed marks and projecting the light onto the dedication region of the card at an acute angle and sensing means for capturing the light signals reflected from the random marks while ignoring the light reflected from the portion of the card not containing a mark.

    • A security element including substrate on which is disposed: in first area, a first optically variable device including a diffractive or reflective relief structure and reflection enhancing material following contours of relief structure; and, in second area, a second optically variable device including an iridescent amplitude interference material. First optically variable device is constituted by a plurality of sub-areas arranged in cyclically repeating sequence along predetermined direction of the security element, the plurality of sub-areas collectively forming first area. Relief parameters of diffractive or reflective relief structure vary from one sub-area to next within each repeat cycle whereby, at any viewing angle, each sub-area within any repeat cycle exhibits different diffractive colour or reflected intensity from those of other sub-areas within same repeat cycle, so, when device is tilted, different diffractive colours or reflected intensities appear to move from one sub-area to next within each repeat cycle along predetermined direction.
