    • Apparatus for cold-forming a thermoplastic sheet to provide a circular container part such as a lid or dish comprising opposing concentric die members for engaging a sheet of thermoplastic material, the sheet being drawn around the circular edge of one of the die members to provide a concentric central portion and a concentric annular depending skirt having a proximal edge adjacent the central portion, an intermediate portion, and a distal free edge, providing an annular void in the die members adjacent the skirt. Apparatus is provided for moving the free edge toward the proximal edge while holding the proximal edge to buckle the intermediate portion into the void. The void has a tapered surface inclining radially outwardly and axially toward the proximal edge to hold the free edge radially inwardly, thereby to permit the intermediate portion to buckle outwardly into the void.

    • A method for closing and/or sealing an open top container without subjecting the container to objectionable axial compressive forces. A closure having a skirt which forms a downwardly opening annular recess or groove and having a bead at the end of the skirt, is constrained against movement while the mouth of the container is moved upwardly into the groove. An inwardly acting compressive force then crimps the closure against the neck of the container, either by embedding the bead in the wall of the container or by gripping the wall of the container above the closure bead or by both. One form of apparatus for carrying out the method is illustrated in the drawings.

    • A method and apparatus for supporting flexible open-ended container bodies, such as formed of plastic, in a closing machine are provided in which the body is moved laterally into an openended partial supporting mold, an end closure member is positioned in aligned relation with the open end of the body, a second partial supporting mold is moved against the side wall of the body at the open end of the open-ended partial mold, and both of the partial molds with the body therebetween are moved into a seaming mechanism whereby the side walls and open end of the body are supported by the partial molds during attachment of the end closure to the body.

    • A folding mechanism for folding adjacent flat flanges respectively connected to a container tube and a container end cap and in which the tube flange has a portion spaced from and extending parallel to the surface of the tube. The end cap flange portion has a substantially U-shaped cross-sectional configuration and substantially encompasses the parallel extending portion of the tube flange. The folding mechanism for folding flat flanges to the configuration described includes first and second members adapted to engage space portions of the end cap flange and respectively pivoted about spaced parallel pivot axes. Linkage means interconnect the two members and cooperate with drive means to pivot the first member about its pivot axis from a first substantially side-by-side relation with respect to the second member to an overlapping relation to fold the cap flange around the tube flange. The folding mechanism further includes latch means maintaining the second member in a fixed position until the first member is pivoted to the overlapping position and which is released in response to the second member moving to the second position to allow pivotal movement of both members about the second pivot axis whereby to further fold the flanges from a position extending perpendicular to the axis of the tube to a position extending substantially parallel to the tube.

    • Provided is a discharge container configured such that a valve assembly is firmly secured to a metallic container body provided with a bead and such that the discharge container has high sealing properties. A discharge container is provided with a metallic container body (11) and a valve assembly (12) which is secured to the opening of the container body (11). The valve assembly (12) is provided with a ping section (21) which is inserted into the opening, a seal material (18) provided to the outer periphery of the ping section (21), and a cover cap (19) which affixes the seal material (18) and the plug section (21) to the container body (11). The seal material (18) is in contact with a circular cylinder section (11c) located below the plastically deformable section of the cover cap (19), and the gap between the container body (11) and the valve assembly (12) is sealed by the seal material (18).
