    • There are disclosed apparatus and method for transforming a moving, multiple layered bed of relatively thin pieces of solid material into a moving stream of the pieces having a considerably lesser number of layers of such pieces, preferably an essentially single layer. The multiple layered bed of pieces is moved on a first conveyor at a relatively slow speed toward the discharge end of the conveyor. At the discharge end of the conveyor the leading edge of the bed of pieces encounters a second conveyor which moves in the same general direction as the conveyor supporting the multiple layered bed of pieces but at least about 10 times greater speed. The second conveyor is disposed at an acute angle with respect to and above the first conveyor in a manner such that the lower or leading end of the second conveyor is positioned near the discharge end of the first conveyor. Projections from the second conveyor are preferably flexible projections which contact the leading edge of the bed and discharge the pieces from the bed as a stream having a height no more than the thickness of a few pieces overlying one another. The discharged pieces are taken away from the first and second conveyors fast enough to prevent undue, if any, overlapping of the discharged pieces. The method and apparatus may be used, for example, to transform a multiple layered bed of unfried potato based chips into a moving stream of chips having an essentially single layer for further treatment, e.g. by frying.

    • Apparatus for the inspection of flask-type glass containers. Glass containers of the type having elongated necks and somewhat flattened main body portions, sometimes referred to as flask-type containers, may be inspected by conventional inspection devices if a particular handling system is used. The neck portion of the glass container is contained in a pocket formed in a neck holder carried by an upper, indexable starwheel. About 180.degree. of the neck circumference is in contact with the neck holder pocket. An upper guide rail contacts that portion of the neck which extends beyond the neck holder. A lower, indexable starwheel has a large pocket cut therein to allow the flattened main body portion to rotate freely at an inspection station. The flask-type container is fully stabilized for rotation by the contact of the neck portion with the neck holder pocket and the upper guide rail.

    • A conveyor having an endless series of holders equipped with cushions to carry fragile objects has an upper run extending from a receiving station to a discharge station and a lower return run with an upward arcuate return path from the lower run to the start of the upper run. The holders are turned upside down on the lower run of the conveyor and are subject to centrifugal force on the upward arcuate return path. The cushions are envelopes of flexible sheet material containing masses of pellets. A free-falling object lands on a cushion at the receiving station of the conveyor and is decelerated without harm by forming a seating recess in the mass of pellets. The return journey of the cushions redistributes the pellets to eliminate the seating recesses and thus enables newly received objects at the receiving station to be decelerated by forming new seating recesses.
