    • A rock bolt includes a hollow body and a gap along a length of the hollow body. At least one strain gauge is affixed to an inner surface of the rock bolt and is accessible from the gap. The rock bolt may include a data logger within the hollow body and coupled to receive signals from one or more strain gauges, and to record these signals in a memory. The data logger may comprise a data port adapted to be accessible from the outside of a bore hole into which the rock bolt is inserted. The data logger also may include at least one of a visual and auditory alarm. A graphic user interface software program can be used to download data from the data logger and set certain operating parameters of the data logger.

    • A mine roof bearing plate having a planar member having a topside, an underside and an elastically deformable domed portion extended downwardly from the underside. A central section at the outer extremity of the domed section defines a bolt hole. The outer extremity of the domed portion includes a downwardly facing beveled annular bearing surface which mates with a spherical washer. A method of tensioning a cable bolt including the steps of placing a spherical washer over a first end of a cable bolt having a bolt head on the other end, placing the inventive mine roof bearing plate over the end of the cable bolt, inserting the cable bolt into a mine roof bolt hole, exerting pressure on the bolt head whereby the bolt head presses on the spherical washer and elastically deforms the domed portion, installing the cable bolt in the bolt hole and releasing pressure from the other end of the cable bolt whereby the domed portion substantially reforms to its original configuration to exert tension of the cable bolt.

    • A rockbolt monitor monitors increased loadings on a rockbolt in underground mines. The monitor includes a rockbolt plate fitted on the rockbolt to engage the surface of the rock, a stack of belleville washers on the end of the rockbolt outside the rockbolt plate and a spring seat plate outside the belleville washers. When a nut is fitted onto the rockbolt and torqued, the belleville washers will compress to provide the desired force urging the rockbolt plate against the surface of the rock. This spring arrangement allows relative movement of the rockbolt plate on the rockbolt in response to ground movement, such as caused by blasting. The load indicator itself includes a threaded sleeve screwed into a threaded bore in the spring seat plate. A spring loaded piston rides in the sleeve. It is biased into engagement with the rockbolt plate. The amount by which the outer end of the piston projects from the end of the sleeve is a measure of the amount of rockbolt plate movement and rockbolt loading that is taken place since installation. To provide a qualitative signal of this having occurred, the piston desirably has an outer end that is painted black and a section adjacent the outer end that is painted red. When the red portion is shown, the rockbolt plate has moved on the rockbolt. The indicator may also include a plunger to signal loosening of the rockbolt or an electric switch operable by the piston to produce an alarm signal when the rockbolt plate moves. Another embodiment of the invention involves two telescoping sleeves, one mounted on the rockbolt plate and the other on the spring seat. The outer sleeve has slots in it through which the inner sleeve movements can be observed.

    • A method for controlling parametric variations in processes where one variable is subject to an exponential change with time. One application is particulary advantageous in underground mine roof bolting using mechanical anchors where a device utilizing the method can be employed to install mine roof bolts at varying initial tensions in such a manner that the bolt tensions found among a population of roof bolts converge to one tension value within one or two hours after installation due to individual differences in tension decay rate. Since roof bolt tension decay bears an exponential relationship to time, variability in bolt tension which develops after mentioned convergence has taken place is small for a long period of time, in marked contrast to a conventional installaton which is characterized by bolt tension variability which grows rapidly into a far wider range immediately after installation. An extension of said mine roof bolting application further allows an exact assessment of mine roof movements using the roof bolts themselves. A device embodying the invention in mine roof bolting as described, senses the roof bolt tension decay rate during the installation process and automatically tensions the roof bolt to a value appropriate to achieve tension convergence as described.

    • A mechanical device for visually indicating the tension in a monitored bolt or the like. The device will visually indicate if the monitored bolt is subject to greater than a predetermined maximum tension or is subject to less than a predetermined minimum acceptable tension. The device will also give visual indication, generally proportional to the tension in the monitored bolt, when the tension in the monitored bolt is at less than the predetermined maximum but more than the predetermined acceptable minimum. The device includes a spring washer, preferably a helical washer, which is inserted inbetween the head of the bolt and the surface or backing plate against which the head of the bolt will bear for substantially resilient compression therebetween. The washer is selected with a spring constant such that the washer will be substantially flattened between the bolt head and the plate only upon the application of a tension to the bolt exceeding the predetermined maximum. The washer includes a pivot member, preferably a pivot pin, which will move axially away from the plate as the washer expands in response to less than predetermined maximum tension in the bolt. The pivot member will be axially spaced a known distance from the plate when the tension in the bolt is equal to the predetermined acceptable minimum tension. An elongated indicating member, or flag, is pivotally mounted at one end thereof to the pivot member.
