Absorption axes (4, 5) of the first and second polarizing plates (1, 2) are orthogonal to each other, and an optical axis of a liquid crystal in the IPS panel (3) and the absorption axis (4) are parallel with each other. A second phase retardation film, obtained by coating a biaxial film (17) with a uniaxial C film (11), is disposed between the second polarizing plate (2) and the IPS panel (3) and is used as a second protective film.

The liquid crystal has a twist angle of 230 to 260 degrees and Δnd of 0.70 to 0.85 νµm. The ?nd of the first phase plate is 150±50nm, and the Δ?nd of the second phase plate is 610±6Onm. The axis of transmission or the axis of absorption of the polarizer makes an angle of 10 to 35 degrees with respect to the optical axis of the second phase plate, and the optical axis of the first phase plate makes an angle of 30 to 60 degrees with the optical axis of the second phase plate. The LCD presents bright images with high contrast.

摘要： One embodiment of the present invention provides a display that emits circularly-polarized light. This display includes a display mechanism that emits linearly- polarized light and a layer (200) placed in the path of the linearly-polarized light. The layer (200) receives the linearly-polarized light on one surface, converts the linearly-polarized light to circularly-polarized light, and then emits the circularly-polarized light from another surface. By emitting circularly-polarized light, the display reduces the perceived distortion found at some angles when the display is viewed through a linearly-polarizing filter.
