So that the head 1 is displaced along the rack 31 while the helical portion of the helical cam 281 is engaged with the rack 31. And an up-down movement of the tip end of the punch 10 is carried out with an area of punching process while the vertical portion of the helical cam 281 is engaged with the rack 31. Further, the head displacement and stoppage and the up-down movement of the punch are completely synchronized with the pitch of the holes to be punched.

    • Apparatus for trimming the lateral marginal portions of successive stacks of sheets of multiple unit width and for subdividing the trimmed stacks into stacks of unit width has an advancing unit which moves the stacks stepwise in a direction at right angles to their width, a trimming station where the marginal portions of successive stacks are trimmed, and two or more severing stations which are disposed one after the other, as considered in the direction of advancement of the stacks, and at each of which the width of the stacks is reduced by one unit width as a result of separation of discrete stacks of unit width therefrom. The stacks at the severing stations are moved sideways by the width of a stack of unit width prior to a separating step. The mechanisms at the severing stations employ knives which are aligned with one another, as considered in the direction of advancement of stacks, and are accessible at the outer sides of the respective severing stations.

    • There is disclosed a positioning head for cutting and marking apparatus, whereby when a plurality of cutter wheels or marking-off wheels are successively moved into place, the positioning head or heads which have already been positioned in place can be locked in place. The positioning head comprises, within a housing mounted on the boss of the cutter or marking-off wheel and slidably fitted on two guide bars, a feed gear threadedly engaged with a feed screw shaft which is extended through the housing, an input gear slidably mounted on an input shaft which is extended through the housing, a group of driving gears for transmitting the rotation of the input gear to the feed gear, and a clutch for connecting and disconnecting the driving force transmitted to the feed gear from the input gear, whereby after the positioning head has been put in place, the clutch may be disengaged so as to lock the positioning head in place while any other positioning head is being moved.

A joint gauge screw precisely adjusts gauge (the spacing between the two punches), and may be raised or lowered for centering as to web. Before each flange punching operation, the web is pressed firmly against a fixed block level with the web die. The piston of the hydraulic cylinder is of such large diameter that the varying positions of the punches will lie within the projected periphery of the piston rod.

    • The method of fabricating the sheet metal duct units of the present invention comprises cutting a plurality of spaced lines of notches in an elongated strip of sheet metal, each of the lines being transverse to the longitudinal axis of the strip. The strip is sheared at predetermined points along the length thereof so that the cutting and the shearing operation combine to form sheet metal segments each having at least one cleat tab on at least one end thereof. Next the sheet metal segments are bent along at least one axis extending longitudinally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the sheet metal so as to form an upstanding leg, the cleat tab being on one end of the upstanding leg. The cleat tab is then bent back against the remainder of the upstanding leg so as to form a cleat.The apparatus for accomplishing the above process comprises a straight line assembly including a notching means for forming notches in predetermined points across the width of the strip, shearing means for shearing the strip into segments of predetermined length; roll former RB means for forming the upstanding leg and for forming additional folds along a line parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip; and cleat forming means positioned adjacent the roll press means for receiving the folded sheet elements therefrom and for engaging and bending the end edges of the upstanding leg to form a cleat.
