    • 1301281 Finishing edges of and seaming non-metallic sheet material SHOE & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 24 Feb 1970 [25 Feb 1969 2 Aug 1969] 38820/69 and 10080/69 Heading B5K An edge of heat-deformable synthetic leather sheet material is treated by bringing the edge into contact with a heated forming member 3 having a surface 4 corresponding in profile to that required of the edge and effecting relative movement between the sheet material and the member 3 to deform successive parts of the edge to the required profile. Preferably, the sheet material comprises a poromeric material having an inner coriacious zone and an outer grain or finish zone and is cut to form a component of a shoe upper. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the member 3 is made of iron and has integral prongs 5 clamped in a holder 6 and connected to an A.O. source 7 and a regulating rheostat 8. The current passes through the member 3 to heat the surface 4 to a temperature of 250-600‹ C., preferably 300‹ C. The holder 6 is adjustable in position both horizontally and vertically relative to a work surface on which the sheet material is positioned. Relative movement between the material and the member 3 is effected by continuous movement of the material by a feeding mechanism. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the holder 6 1 has slots in which the prongs 5 1 are vertically adjustable, an aperture 21 in the work surface 2 permitting this adjustment. Horizontal adjustment of the holder 6 1 may be effected by shifting a support 20 therefor which is slidably mounted on a main support 15. Feeding of the material is effected by the engagement of a freely rotatable milled wheel 12 with a driven milled wheel 11 protruding slightly through an aperture 10. The wheel 12 is journalled on a curved lever 19 fixed to a shaft 16 slidable in a tube 13. A spring 18 urges the lever 19 to bring the wheel 12 down against the wheel 11 at a point slightly forward of the top dead centre position of the wheel 11. The invention is applicable to the finishing of a closed seam at the heel of a shoe upper. Two superposed sheets (30), (31), Fig. 4 (not shown), are welded and trimmed by an electrode (32) or stitched and then passed through the machine of Fig. 3 to round-off the edge. Subsequently, the sheets are opened out. If the material only has a thin coloured topcoat and an uncoloured or lightly coloured substrate, the edge may be treated, prior to heating, with a dye or pigment, from an ink-fed roller, so as to colour the edge so that, after heating, it resembles the appearance of the free topcoat surface.
