    • An embodiment of the subject invention is directed to a jack incorporating one or more strain gauges. The one or more strain gauges can be positioned on, within, or integral to the jack. When a load or force is applied by the jack, one or more materials within the jack are deformed or displaced as a result of the applied load. The one or more strain gauges are used to measure the deformation or displacement and thus measure the strain. The measured strain can be used to determine the magnitude of the load applied by the jack. In an embodiment, a plurality of strain gauges are used and the resulting strain measurements can be combined to determine the applied load.

    • A structural pile assembly includes a driven pile and pressurized grout contained beneath the pile so as to exert an upward force on the pile. An enclosure, such as a bladder or bellows, is filled with grout from a reservoir via a conduit which preferably extends axially along the length of the pile and is left in place after the grout hardens. A pressure gauge measures the pressure of the grout within the enclosure, permitting the direct measurement of end bearing and side bearing capacities of the resulting pile assembly. The load bearing capacity of the pile is enhanced by the pressurized grout, and is preferably at least twice the end bearing capacity of an unpressurized pile.

    • An energy impulse generator for transferring an energy pulse to a surface. The generator exchanges messages with a computing means through a communication interface. The generator comprises a housing. The generator further comprises an impact assembly movably mounted within the housing between at least a resting position, a latched position and an impact position. In the impact position, the impact assembly transfers the energy pulse to the surface. The generator also includes an energy storage means attached to the impact assembly. In the latched position, the energy storage means is capable of releasing a specified amount of energy to the impact assembly such that upon release of the specified amount of energy the impact assembly moves from the latched position to the impact position then returns to the resting position. The computing means controls the release of the specified amount of energy to the impact assembly.

    • A lifting assembly for raising and supporting an edge of a foundation includes a lifting saddle slidably received over a pier that is driven into the ground adjacent the edge of the foundation, a bracket supported by the lifting saddle and adapted to be affixed to and to support the foundation, and a load transfer device configured to be supported atop an upper end of the pier. The lifting saddle is connected to the load transfer device by threaded rods slidably received through the load transfer device. The bracket is pivotally connected to the lifting saddle such that the bracket can rock side-to-side, thus self-aligning and remaining aligned with the foundation during a lifting operation. The bracket can also pivot about a vertical axis and can slide in a forward or rearward direction relative to the lifting saddle. The lifting saddle can pivot relative to the pier about a horizontal axis.

    • A device which separately measures the skin friction and the load-bearing capacity of the earth at the bottom of a hole. An expansion device is in the bottom of the hole, with a shaft resting on top it. A pressurized fluid is pumped into the expansion device, via a coaxial pipe and rod, to fill and expand it. By observing the movements of the rod and pipe responsive to the expansion and relative to the ground surface, it is possible to record the pressure versus upward movement of the shaft and the pressure versus downward movement of the earth below the bottom of the shaft. The ultimate or maximum skin friction is indicated when the load-upward movement curve plotted from the data indicates no further increase in load with upward movement. The ultimate end bearing capacity is indicated when the load-downward movement curve indicates no further increase in load with downward movement. When the shaft has concrete poured down the hole, the expansion device may be a bellows-like affair with the rod connected to the bottom of the bellows and the pipe connected to the top. When the shaft is a driven pile, the expansion device is a massive piston which can withstand the driving forces.
