    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable improved monitoring and control of a reciprocating air motor so as to provide monitoring of the piston position, revolutions and flow rates, total revolutions, runaway control and the capability to diagnose failure of the air motor and pump lower components.SOLUTION: An air operated pump 10 uses a magnet 14 mounted in a valve cap 16 of an air motor 18 and two reed sensors 20 mounted in a valve cover 22 to monitor the speed and position of a valve. A solenoid 24 is mounted on the valve cover 22, and is set to extend a plunger 26 into the valve cap 16 to stop valve movement and therefor the pump from running away. A magneto-resistive sensor 34 is arranged in the center of the air motor 18 to accurately monitor the position of a piston 36, and with the air valve sensor 20 provides the input necessary for accurate control and diagnostics of the pump 10, and makes it suitable for metering and application of a plurality of components.
