摘要： Methods are provided for generating or recovering gaseous materials such as hydrogen and solids such as metals through the smoldering combustion of an organic material. The methods include admixing a porous matrix material with an organic material, and, in some embodiments a catalyst, to produce a porous mixture. The mixture is exposed to an oxidant, initiating a self-sustaining smoldering combustion of the mixture, and collecting the vapors and combustion products or processing the porous matrix following combustion to physically separate the porous matrix material from ash containing inorganic materials of value. Additional embodiments aggregate the organic material or catalyst or porous matrix material or mixture thereof in an impoundment such as a reaction vessel, lagoon or matrix pile. Further embodiments utilize at least one heater to initiate combustion and at least one air supply port to supply oxidant to initiate and maintain combustion.

The method includes determining a transformation that maps the first scene into the second scene. The rendering of the transitional object evolves according to specified transitional parameters as the transitional images are displayed. A viewer receives a sense of the connectedness of the scenes from the transitional images. Virtual tours of broad areas, such as cityscapes, can be created using inter-scene transitions among a complex network of pairs of scenes.

摘要： Methods and apparatus for assessing and correcting phase variations and motion artifacts in a coherent tomogram of a sample. Coherent techniques are used scan a broadband optical beam across a sample in a specified scan pattern and to acquire a cube of complex data constituting a full tomogram. Generalized motion of the sample is then quantified based at least on a phase variation measured during the course of scanning the broadband optical beam in the specified scan pattern. Generalized motion includes both actual motion and apparent motion due to organized variation of some physical parameter such as temperature. Intensity structure of speckle imaged during the course of coherently acquiring the full tomograpm may be used to correct for motion of the sample in a plane transverse to a depth axis along the incident beam.

摘要： A fragrance dispenser comprises a ceramic outer shell containing a gel composition. The ceramic can be greenware, and can be impregnated with a fragrance, such as in the form of a volatile oil. The gel composition can contain fragrance or deodourisers that can diffuse out of the gel and infuse the surrounding ceramic, from which it can be released into the air. The ceramic cartridge can have indentations to allow it to be retained in a desired location; these can permit the attachment of a plastic mounting clip having a plurality of flexible arms that slot into the indentations to grip and hold the cartridge in place. This mounting clip could then be used to attach the cartridge to suitable surfaces such as a bathroom wall or the interior of a dispenser housing. Furthermore, the cartridge can have a locating recess on one or more of its sides, to receive a mounting post and thereby position the dispenser accurately and inhibit dislodgement.

摘要： A steerable optical transmit and receive terminal includes a MEMS-based N×1 optical switch network. Each optical switch in the optical switch network uses an electrostatic MEMS structure to selectively position a translatable optical grating close to or far from an optical waveguide. In the close (“ON”) position, light couples between the translatable optical grating and the optical waveguide, whereas in the far (“OFF”) position, no appreciable light couples between the translatable optical grating and the optical waveguide. The translatable optical grating is disposed at or near a surface of the optical switch network. Thus, the translatable optical grating emits light into, or receives light from, free space. The steerable optical transmit and receive terminal also includes a lens and can steer a free space optical beam in a direction determined by which port of the N×1 optical switch network is ON.

摘要： An apparatus for grasping a jar and aiding in lid opening includes a base element that may be placed on a surface, and a top housing that is rotatably secured to the base element. A spiral guide element located between the base element and the top housing includes at least one spiral groove. One or more jaw members may be moveably secured to the top housing, and have a protrusion located within the spiral groove(s). The rotation of the top housing in a first direction (with respect to the base element) causes at least one of the jaw members to move radially inward with respect to the axis to engage a base of container. The rotation of the top housing in a second direction causes at least one jaw member to move radially outward with respect to the axis to disengage with the base of the container.
