    • 538,539. Winches. COOKE, C. May 13, 1940, No. 8561. [Class 78 (v)] A power winch for hauling timber &c. has double-walled side frames between the confines of which are located the drum driving gears and brake. A gear wheel E, locked by dogs to the winding drum C, is disposed between the walls A, A 1 on one side, and a brake pulley is located between the walls B, B 1 on the other side. The flanges D of the drum C occupy openings in the walls A 1 , B 1 , and the cable T passes between vertical rolls S 3 , and, optionally, horizontal rolls to the load. A high-speed pinion H 1 is slidably mounted on a power shaft H driven through a sprocket J by a chain passing over a sprocket on the power unit of a vehicle to which the winch is attached. A low-speed pinion K 1 is slidably mounted on a shaft K geared to the shaft H by sprockets and chain H 2 . Either of the pinions H 1 , K 1 can be slid into engagement with the wheel E, or both out of gear therewith, by a lever L rocked by a handle L 4 , or link connected thereto, to one of three positions. The brake band F 1 can be tightened by a hand-wheel O, which may have a quick-action device, or the latter may be separately arranged. A removable detent may bear on the teeth of wheel E. A pivoted sprag Q can be raised by the cable T, the latter being put over an idle pulley V for this purpose, and the sprag is held up by pivoted catches R taking over studs R 1 . Brackets P may be provided for bolting to the rear axle differential casing of the vehicle. Ball or roller bearings for the drum and power shafts are mounted on the outer walls A, B.

    • 591,375. Winches; anchoring-apparatus. COOKE, C. May 5, 1945, No. 11466. [Classes 78(ii) and 78(v)] In a power driven winch of the kind which is mounted on the rear of a tractor and is provided with a pivoted sprog for anchoring it, a flexible connection B is provided between the sprog A and a drum C mounted on a driving shaft which turns the drum through a clutch F and raises the sprog clear of the ground. To lock the sprog in position a brake band H actuated by a lever K engages a brake drum J secured to the drum C. A rack L and pawl M are associated with the lever K to hold the sprog in the raised position. The lever K actuates also the clutch control lever G. To hold the sprog in the inoperative position two catches P are provided pivoted to the main framing and formed with openings P which engage set screws A on the sprog. The catches rest on stops P when they are disengaged. To prevent damage due to overwinding the back P of the opening P is cut away. In a modification the cable drum C is driven through manually actuated worm gearing. The worm shaft is mounted on a pivoted bracket which is rocked to disengage the worm. The bracket is controlled by a cam secured to an angularly adjustable shaft. To prevent the main cable running back when the clutch is disengaged a pawl can engage with the teeth of the gear wheel connected to the main cable or with teeth formed inside the rim of the brake drum.
