    • 21,747. Schaefer, G. L. Oct. 31. Antiseptics; medicinal preparations.-Relates to new antiseptic medicinal compounds which are free from noxious and irritant properties, and consists of metallic salts, such as the bismuth, strontium, lithium, and iron salts of the sulphonic acids of phenols, such as carbolic acid, guaiacol, or #-naphthol. These compounds are prepared by acting upon the phenol with excess of concentrated sulphuric acid until a clear solution is obtained, then separating the phenol sulphonic acid from the excess of unaffected phenol by extracting the latter with benzene or the like, and finally separating the sulphonic acid from the excess of sulphuric acid and converting it into one of the above-mentioned metallic salts. For example, the sulphuric acid is precipitated as an insoluble lead, calcium, or barium salt, and the remaining sulphonate solution is converted into the required salt by double decomposition. Or, if only sufficient base is used to precipitate the sulphuric acid, the free sulphonicacid remaining is neutralized with the carbonate, hydrate, or oxide of the required metal.

    • 8227. Schaefer, G. L. March 30. Antiseptics; medicinal preparations.-Guaiacol sulphonates of alkaloids, which are free from the objectionable odour and caustic effects of guaiacol and permit of medicinal administration in considerable quantities, are prepared as follows:- Guaiacol sulphonic acid is obtained by heating guaiacol with sulphuric acid upon a water bath, diluting with water, forming an alkaline or alkaline-earth salt, and then liberating the sulphonic acid therefrom by a suitable mineral acid. The sulphonic acid is then combined with an alkaloid, such as quinine, cinchonine, or the like, either with one molecular proportion to form a neutral salt, or with half a molecular proportion to form an acid salt. The combination is effected by evaporating solutions of the alkaloid in diluted guaiacol sulphonic-acid solution, or by reacting with a metallic guaiacol sulphonate upon an alkaloid salt. The products combine the antipyretic properties of the alkaloid with the antiseptic and antifebrile properties of guaiacol.
