    • 913,378. Electric positional control. MERO, P. G. S. Jan. 6, 1960 [March 9, 1959], No. 476/60. Class 40 (1). In a writing telegraph the transmitter stylus is attached to an operating arm for the signal translating apparatus by a universal joint in order to allow the stylus to be held by an operator at any desired angle to the writing surface. The universal joint is hingedly connected to the operating arm so that the stylus may be laid down out of contact with the writing surface. In Fig. 3, the universal joint is formed by a spherical portion 41 on the body of stylus 15, near the marking point 43 which engages in a socket formed in the end of the bifurcated forks 31 and 32. The end of the bifurcated member remote from the stylus is formed in a bearing 34 around shaft 35 attached to the member 16 of the signal translating apparatus, this bearing allowing the pen to be rested in the position shown dotted at 44A. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, the stylus is universally jointed to the bifurcated member by means of a ring 146 fitting in a groove 141 of the stylus, the ring having an extension 147 journalled in a shaft 145 which is in turn journalled in the bifurcated member 131 and 132, this member being attached to the signal translating apparatus in the same fashion as in the previous embodiment to allow the pen to be laid down out of contact with the writing surface. Specification 678,469 is referred to.
