    • A retaining device for securing a container such as a refuse bin, includes a retaining member 26 and an upright structure 14. The retaining member 26 is moveable between a first position and a second position relative to the upright structure. When the retaining member is in its first position a support formation 18 and holding formation 20 are spaced from one another for receiving a part of a container, and when the retaining member is in its second position the formations are positioned closer one another to retain the bin. The device further includes a locking mechanism 34 which is at least partially housed within the upright structure and may be key operated. The locking mechanism is operable to hold the retaining member in its second position relative to the upright structure. The retaining member may move linearly between the positions and may be spring biased towards its first position. The retaining device may be fixed to a wall or a ground surface by a base plate 38. The upright structure may be height adjustable.

    • 856,368. Curving; corrugating. VERTIMAX Ltd., and ANDERSON, J. May 13, 1959 [May 16, 1958], No. 15808/58. Class 83 (4). A metal-bending machine comprises an upper roller and a pair of lower rollers all supported at their ends by standards, each standard being formed of inner and outer end-plates with interconnecting front and rear plates, said standards being interconnected near the foot thereof by a housing in which is located the motor and reversible gearing which transmits the drive to the lower rollers through a sprocket wheel and chain drive or other gearing housed in one of the standards. Standards 11, each comprising inner and outer steel plates 12, 13, interconnected by front and rear plates, are mounted on a base 10 and a housing 14 extending between them encloses a motor 16 and a variable-speed reversible hydraulic transmission unit 17, controlled by levers 21 or 22, fast on a transverse shaft 23, outside and adjacent the standards 11. A driving shaft 18 of the unit 17 extends into one of the standards 11 and drives through a sprocket 20, chain 40, jockeypulley 40a, all within the standard 11, a sprocket 39 fast on a shaft 32 extending across the machine. The shaft 32 drives, through gearing 35, Fig. 4 (not shown), 37 and 36, two rollers 33, 34, the shaft 32 and rollers 33, 34 being supported at each end in bearings carried by a housing 27 bolted to the inner plate 12 of each standard 11. Housings 43, pivoted at 42 to the tops of the standards 11, have semi-circular bearing faces 48 arranged to fit over roller races 47 of each end of a top roller 44. Spring- biased pins 55 in the housings 43 fit into axial bores in the ends of the roller 44. To indicate the position of the roller 44 relative to the rollers 33, 34, a pointer 57 is pivoted on each housing to register with a scale 58 thereon and has a toe 59 biased by a spring 61 against one face of a recess 60 in the standard 11. When a plate is bent to cylindrical form, one housing 43 is swung away from the end of the roller 44 to allow the bent plate to be withdrawn. The rollers may be replaced by corrugating rollers.

    • 480,462. Heavy-current switches. ELLISON, Ltd., G., and ANDERSON, J. Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30249. [Class 38 (v)] In order to neutralize the electromagnetic forces acting upon the fixed and moving contacts of a circuit-breaker of the kind in which a movable contact-member is adapted to bridge the ends of a pair of fixed contacts, the breaker is provided with an iron part or parts mounted on the movable contact-member and adapted to co-operate with a stationary iron part or parts mounted at any convenient position or positions. The invention is applicable also to isolating switches and any other allied apparatus for controlling heavy currents. The contacts may be immersed in a liquid, air, or gas. In Figs. 1, 2, the inner side of each main fixed contact c insulatingly carries an iron plate h, and an iron piece i is secured to and below the movable bridging bar a. The plates h are slotted so as to straddle the bar a, and piece i has upturned parts j which straddle the bar a and are bent similarly to the lower ends of plates h. The latter are similarly magnetized by the current in the adjacent fixed conductors and i is complementarily magnetized by the current in bridge a, the arrangement being such that the force between them may neutralize to any desired extent the repulsive forces between a, c. In Fig. 4, the plates h are flat and their slots embrace the ends of piece i, which in this case are turned up at right-angles. In Fig 5, iron plates h extend from opposite tank walls towards the bridge a and a pair of plates i are secured athwart the latter.
