    • An electrolysis device uses a homopolar generator to produce the required low voltage, high current DC electricity. The device includes a liquid (e.g. water) tank H with the homopolar generator provided within the tank. The generator includes two conducting discs I1, I2, which are caused to rotate by a magnetic field produced by an electromagnetic field/flux generator G. The electromagnetic field/flux generator is a magnet or electromagnetic material with a winding or coil around its periphery, the coil or winding inducing a magnetic field when a current is passed through it. The rotating discs each act as an anode, with a corresponding cathode V also provided within the tank. This allows, for example, the production of hydrogen and oxygen by the electrolysis of water. In an alternative, the discs may be rotated by an internal turbine driven by air or gas.

    • 820,453. Retractive switches; switches held set and freed mechanically; switch cases. ASSOCIATED FIRE ALARMS Ltd., and JACKSON, J. Sept. 24, 1957 [Sept. 24, 1956], No. 29182/56. Class 38 (5). An emergency switch of the kind wherein fracture of a glass or like fragile cover either operates the switch automatically or enables the switch to be hand-operated, comprises a easing 10 having a hinged lid 11 with a circular glass window 13. A block 15 of insulating material carries a metal block 16 in which a plunger 18 is slidable against a spring 30. The plunger 18 is normally held in its mid-position by glass 13 and a transverse member 20 engages spring blade 24 to hold contacts 28, 29 open. When the glass 13 is broken the plunger 18 moves outwardly to allow contacts 28, 29 to close. If the plunger 18 is fully depressed the member 20 passes beyond the spring blade 24 and contacts 28, 29 are again closed. A U-shaped lever pivoted at 33 on block 16 carries on one arm 30a a subsidiary plunger 32 urged into engagement with the lid 11 by a spring 35 acting on the other arm 30b. When the lid 11 is opened the arm 30b engages blade 24 and prevents contacts 28, 29 from closing. The contacts may be closed with the lid open (e.g. for test purposes) by depression of the plunger 32. A second set of contacts may be operated by the opposite end of member 20 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. In Fig. 6 the member 20 is arranged to engage blade 24 on depression of plunger 18 and thereby close contacts 128, 129. A lever 40 pivoted at 41 and under action of a spring 45 engages a groove in plunger 18 to maintain it depressed. The plunger 18 in this embodiment does not engage the glass 13 and must be depressed after fracture of the glass, only being released by opening the lid 11 and operating a handle portion 46 of the lever 40. This latching feature may also be provided on the first embodiment of the switch.
