[Class 87 (ii).] In hopper-and-plunger machines for forming long rods or the like from dough, porcelain mixture, artificial resin and like plastic materials, in which the plunger is advanced by a hydraulic ram, the ram effects an automatic control of valves regulating the plunger movement. As illustrated, the plunger 4 is advanced by a hydraulic ram 7 and is retracted by an adjustable spring 16. An arm 9 on the ram acts automatically through the rod 10 to close the exhaust valve 11 at the end of the return stroke and re-open it at the end of the pressure stroke so that the machine works continuously. Pressure fluid supplied by a pump through the conduit 12 escapes in part past the hand-set valve 14, and is utilized in part to advance the ram. In a modified arrangement of valves for use with an accumulator, two valves are operated automatically by the moving ram so that one is always closed when the other is open. Several plungers may be operated by a common ram and each plunger may carry several dies each operating in a separate mould, while each of the moulds may have several exits.
