    • 155,116. West, T. A. R., and Cooper, S. H. R. Dec. 23, 1919. Road-traffic signals on vehicles; visible signals. -A device for indicating the turning and stopping of vehicles comprises a laterally extending arm on each side of the vehicle, adapted to be rotated on its axis, and carrying at its outer end a signal element which is displayed by rotating it from edge view to face view. Fig. 1 shows the device applied to a motor-car. A hollow rod 1 is secured by clips 2 to the holding-down bolts of the wind-screen. The visual signals are carried by two rods 5 so supported in the hollow tube 1 that by means of handles 6 they can be slid out to expose the signals, and also rotated to actuate the signals. A signal consists of a lamp casing of flat cylindrical form having coloured glasses 10 in its flat faces, and surrounded by a coloured disk 11 to serve as a daylight signal. Contact is made to illuminate the lamp 13 when the handle 6 is turned through 90 degrees to bring the signal into its operative position. In the preferred form, the right-hand signal may show a red light forwardly and the left-hand signal a green light forwardly, while both the rearwardly-shown lights may be red.

    • 380,555. Boxes or baskets. WEST, R., 29, Evelyn Road, Walthamstow, London. July 27, 1931, No. 21351. [Class 18.] In a box or basket folded from a blank of strawboard &c. having g extensions 8 from the side walls 7 folded against the end walls 9, the extensions 8 and end walls are rectangular and the extensions are of a depth substantially equal to the depth of the end walls and are of a length greater than half the width of the box so that when folded they overlap outside the end walls to which they are then fixed by a single fastener. The end walls and extensions are each provided with a pair of slots 10, 11 respectively, the slots coinciding when the extensions are folded against the end walls and receiving the ends of soft metal clips 13, the ends being inserted from the outside and being bent down against the inner faces of the end walls. A handle 14 extends from one side of the box to the other and has a pair of slots 15 formed in each of its ends to coincide with pairs of slots 12 in the side walls 7 of the box, metal clips 13 being inserted through the slots to secure the handle to the sides of the box. The sides of the box may be provided with an internal groove for the reception of a removable lid or a lid 17, having recesses 18 to engage the handle 14 and end flanges turned down against the ends of the box, may be provided ; the lid may have a finger-hole 19 for lifting purposes.

    • 128,151. Roots, R. W., Roots, S., and Falconer, J. Feb. 13, 1919. Filters and strainers having sheet filtering or straining materials.-Oil is delivered to a receptacle 8, containing hot water, through a hollow spindle 13, which discharges into the lowest of a series of superposed gauze traps 17 supported on the spindle. The traps have solid tops and the oil rises through the water, passing successively through the gauze sides of the several traps, impurities being retained by the traps. Short pipes 19 allow of upward flow should any one of the traps become clogged. The oil from the surface may overflow into a separate compartment of the receptacle in which a gauze straining-bucket is provided. It is discharged from the inside of the straining-bucket through apertures 26 , 26 and a pipe 29. A corner of the compartment containing the traps 17 is separated off by a partition which does not extend to the bottom. The water passing under this partition flows through an aperture 35 into a small receptacle 36 having a discharge pipe 37 fitted with an apertured screw coupling 38 by which the water level in the apparatus can be adjusted. The spindle 13 is fitted with a horizontal bar 20 by which it is supported and can be agitated to remove impurities adhering to the traps 17.
