Continuous discharge apparatus, rotary. - Relates to driers of the type in which the material is cascaded through the space between two concentric rotary drums and heated gases are passed through the inner drum and the space between the drums, and consists in the provision of flights 12, Figs. 1 and 3, extending throughout the entire length and depth of the space between the drums and dividing the space into longitudinal chambers 13 preferably communicating with each other adjacent to the inner drum 2. The forward end of the outer drum is located within a furnace flue 19 and the gases pass through nozzles 20,.Figs. 1 and 9, arranged between the drums into the inner drum. The nozzles are formed of flat plates and may be arranged at an angle to the axis of the drums. The gases are accelerated through the inner drum by helical flights 18 which may be formed with upstanding portions and arranged in staggered relation to one another. The wet material is fed from a hopper 25 through helical flights 26 into the drying compartments through which it is cascaded by the flights 12 and the shelves 15, 16. The shelves 16 on the inner drum may be arranged in line with the flights 12. The dried material passes from the buckets 29 at the rear end of the outer drum through shoots 28 formed in the discharge head 27. In a modification, the forward end of the inner drum is flared outwards and is directly connected to the furnace flue.

    • Grain, such as wheat, maize, rice, and the like, stored in a silo, ship's hold, or similar receptacle is preserved by introducing solid carbon dioxide into the receptacle with the grain. In an example about five tons of grain are distributed over the bottom of a silo having a capacity of about 214 tons of grain so as to form a bottom layer or pad and then solid carbon dioxide and grain are fed in simultaneously about 10 cwts. of carbon dioxide being used for the whole of the grain: the rate of feed of the carbon dioxide is preferably accelerated as the silo is filled and, before the last few tons of grain are filled in, a layer of substantial thickness of solid carbon dioxide is applied over the surface of the grain, this layer being then topped with the last tons of the grain to form a pad over the carbon dioxide; the space between the top of the grain and the top of the silo is filled in with cork slabs or other insulating material, a portion of such material being fixed to the side walls and a portion being removable from the inlet passage way with the door of the silo. When the grain is stored for a considerably period additional quantities of solid carbon dioxide are added at intervals to the grain at the top of the silo. A partial vacuum may be formed at the lower end of the silo to facilitate the passage of gas downwards. Apparatus for crushing and feeding the solid carbon dioxide at a desired rate may be arranged with the silos. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that the grain may be treated with a refrigerant in the form of an inert gas such a carbon dioxide or nitrogen.ALSO:Grain, such as wheat, maize, rice, and the like, stored in a silo, ship's hold, or similar receptacle is preserved by introducing solid carbon dioxide into the receptacle with the grain.     • A radio communication apparatus including: (a) a backfire dielectrically loaded antenna for operation at a frequency in excess of 200 MHz comprising: an electrically insulative dielectric core of a solid material having a relative dielectric constant greater than 5 and having an outer surface including oppositely directed distal and proximal surface portions extending transversely of an axis of the antenna and a side surface portion extending between the transversely extending surface portions, the core outer surface defining an interior volume the major part of which is occupied by the solid material of the core; a three-dimensional antenna element structure including at least one pair of elongate conductive antenna elements disposed on or adjacent the side surface portion of the core and extending from the distal core surface portion towards the proximal core surface portion; a feed structure in the form of an axially extending elongate laminate board comprising at least a transmission line section acting as a feed line which extends through a passage in the core from the distal core surface portion to the proximal core surface portion, the antenna having exposed contact areas on or adjacent the core proximal surface portion; and (b) radio communication circuit means having an equipment laminate circuit board with at least one conductive layer, the conductive layer or layers having a plurality of contact terminal support areas to each of which is conductively bonded a respective spring contact positioned so as to bear resiliently against respective ones of the exposed contact areas of the antenna.
