    • The invention relates to turbo-electric generators of less than 1000 kw maximum output having a gas turbine prime mover operating on a closed circuit system for the working fluid and an electric generator with an armature sufficiently free of continuous magnetic material to generate alternating electric power at a frequency which is at least equal to the rotational speed of said turbine without prohibitive hysteresis and like iron losses. According to the invention, the turbine (3,4) and generator (12) are coupled directly together by a coupling which extends between the turbine housing (14) and the generator housing (15). Preferably, the generator housing (15) is pressurised to substantially the same pressure as that of the working fluid. It is also preferred that the generator (12) comprises a series of axially aligned and relatively rotatable disc-shaped winding assemblies and a coaxial series of disc-shaped permanent magnet assemblies interleaved with the winding assemblies and providing magnetic lines of force parallet to the common axis.

[Classes 31 (i) and 42 (ii).] Rotary-blade machines.-A web severing mechanism comprises a feed-roller having an unyielding periphery, a feed-roller having a yielding periphery, a knife mounted in one feed-roller and coacting with the other to cut the web periodically, and means for automatically increasing the area of web gripped by the feed-rollers at the time of cutting. Web 5 is drawn from a roll 4 by feedrollers 7, 8, of which the roller 8 is of predetermined size and comprises a resilient outer portion 10. A rotary shaft 9 on which the roller 8 is fixed rotates intermittently, through a Geneva wheel 18 and reduction gearing, a shaft 26 carrying a cam 28. This cam raises periodically hooks 31 on levers 29 carried at the ends of a shaft 30 and each connected by a pin 32 and slot 33 to a bell-crank lever 16 which is rocked thereby. The spindle 12 of the feed-roller 7 is mounted in vertical guides 13 and projects into cam slots 15 in the bell-crank levers. As the levers are rocked, the feed-roller 7 is pressed down on to the resilient portion 10 of the measuring roller 8, compressing it until a radial knife 11, Fig. 5, normally below its surface, is exposed and cuts the web, the compressed portions on either side of the knife holding the web securely during the cutting operation.

    • 322,142. Williams, H. R. Dec. 10, 1928, [Convention date]. Rollers, treating; wheels and other tools.-In a machine for grinding long heavy rolls such as calender rolls, the roll 1 is supported and rotated in a substantially upright position while a grinding-wheel is traversed longitudinally along the roll, automatic means being provided to vary the distance between the grinding-wheel and the roll axis so as to impart the required camber to the roll. The roll is supported on a ballbearing spindle 2 carried by the base 5 and driven by worm-wearing 6. The upper roll-end is supported in a bearing 7 adjustable in a fixed arm 8. The grinding- wheel which preferably consists of a number of separate discs 9 - - 11 is mounted on a sleeve 12 in a carriage 13 and is belt driven from a motor 15. Traversing movement is imparted to the carriage by a vertical screw 16 driven by worm gearing 21, the carriage being guided during this movement by a frame 22 pivoted about the axis of the screw 16. In order to impart the required camber to the roll, the frame 22 is swung by gearing operated from the grinding-carriage so that the grinding-wheel recedes from the roll axis as the middle of the roll is approached and is then moved towards the roll axis until the roll end is reached. For this purpose the grinding-carriage is secured to a chain 26 running over sprockets 27, 28, the shaft of the sprocket 28 being connected by a chain 29 and worm-gearing 32 to a cam 34 engaged by a roller mounted on a link 36 pivoted to the guide frame 22. The link 36 is provided with lugs to accommodate a nut 40 carried on a screwed link 42 to provide adjustment of the grinding-wheel radially of the work. The cam 34 is designed so that the movements of the guide frame imparted through the link 3 are such as to give the required camber to the roll. For grinding the ends of the roll the chain driving the cam 34 is disconnected from the grinding-carriage and the grinding-wheel is moved up to the work by means of the nut 40. In a modification, Fig. 4, the guide 102 for the car- .riage is movable about a central horizontal axis 103, this movement being produced bv a cam 129 driven from the chain connected to the grinding- carriage through a belt 125 and worm-gearing 127. The traversing-screw is mounted in the guide and is driven from a splined shaft 111 through wormgearing 112. In order to allow the grinding-wheel 134 to be moved towards the roll for grinding the end portions, the wheel is mounted in a yoke 135 which can swing about a vertical shaft 136 mounted in the carriage. Adjustment of the yoke is effected by means of a link 142. The drive is conveyed from the motor 146 through belts 149 and 152 so that the drive is not disturbed by adjustment of the grinding-wheel. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the grinding carriage moves on a fixed guide 201 and the roll is mounted on a frame 221 carried on a hemispherical bearing 223 and guided at its upper end at 225. The roll frame is rocked during the traversing of the grinding-carriage by means of a cam 219 driven from the chain 208 attached to the grinding- carriage through a chain 212 and worm-gearing 217.

    • 174,973. Williams, J. R. Sept. 4, 1920. Anti-ballooning arrangements.-Relates to wire separators for ring spinning and like frames particularly to those of the kind described in Specifications 104,018 and 109,864. The legs of the separators are secured directly to the bracket fixed to the separator rod or directly to the rod itself by drilling two vertical holes c, Fig. 1, to receive the legs a and a transverse hole through the bracket or rod and forming grooves in the legs to receive a rivet f. A channel-shaped bracket j may be arranged against the rod with its flanges vertical, as shown in Fig. 4, or horizontal and partly cut away, as shown in Fig. 6 to receive the legs, which may be provided with grooves to receive a set-screw or bolt i, or may be plain so as to allow the separators to be adjusted vertically. The body of the separator may be fotmed by doubling the wire in a series of loops,. and the middle loops r of each may be bent laterally, the loops of adjacent separators overlapping, as shown in Fig. 11, to prevent the yarn from fouling the loops in its rotation. The rods may be provided with weighted or spring- pressed arms t, Fig. 14, which, when the ring- rail is lowered for doffing, engage the bottom rail of the machine and turn the separators to the position shown in dotted lines.
