    • 576,456. Engraving. MILLER, R. S. Aug. 28, 1944, No. 16290. [Class 100 (ii)] To enable work-pieces to be engraved with serial numbers in addition to the pattern, number drums are arranged beneath an opening in the pattern plate. In one form, Fig. 4, each drum 13, freely mounted on the shaft 14 has ten equally spaced pins 18 projecting from one face of the drum, which are engaged by a pawl 23 having a tooth 25 and urged into contact with the two lowermost pins by a spring 26. The pawl is connected to a press-button 20, held in the position shown by a spring 21 and its stroke is just sufficient to turn the drum through a tenth of a revolution. The shaft 14 has ten longitudinal grooves 15 which are engaged by a spring-pressed retaining plunger 16. Instead of the plunger 16, a spring pawl may be used. In a further form, Fig. 7, the units drum only is actuated by a lever 30 which is fixed on a shaft 38. When the lever 30 is depressed it turns, through a dog clutch, the wheel 43; freely mounted on the shaft 28 and having ten notches 44, one of which engages a pin 18 on the units drum 13 and turns it through a tenth of a revolution. Fixed to this wheel 43 is an arm 46 carrying a pin 45 which engages once every complete revolution of the wheel 43, in a notch 47 of a wheel 48 freely mounted on another shaft 49 and moves the wheel 48 through a tenth of a revolution. This wheel 48 is fixed to another wheel 50 having notches 51 engaging the pins 18 of the tens drum 13. The wheel 50 in turn carries an arm 52 with a pin 53 which similarly engages once every complete revolution of the wheel 50 in notches of a wheel 54 freely mounted on the shaft 38 and thus transfers from the tens to the hundreds drum. Similar mechanism provides transfer for the higher denominations. The shafts 38, 49 are mounted in a link 32 pivoted at 35 to the casing 12, and in a similar link, not shown, at the other end. A handle 33 on the link 32 enables the transfer mechanism to be swung out of contact with the drums 13. Instead of being manually operated, the lever 30 may be operated automatically as each new workpiece is placed on the holder.
