    • Described herein is a shutter mechanism (10) suitable for use in a single-use camera. The mechanism (10) comprises a mounting plate (12, 120) and a shutter member (14, 140) mounted thereon. Shutter member (14, 140) comprises a spring (141) connected to a shutter blade/trigger member (142) by means of arm portions (143, 144), the connection between the spring (141) and the shutter blade/trigger member (142) to the arm portions (143, 144) being effected by hinges (145, 146, 147, 148). The mounting plate (12, 120) comprises a circular disc (120) having recess portions (121, 126) in which spring (141) and shutter blade/trigger member (142) are respectively located. Depression of shutter blade/trigger member (142) moves it to a metastable position against the action of the spring (141), and once through that position, the action of the spring (141) accelerates the shutter blade/trigger member (142) over the lens (not shown) to provide an exposure for photographic material mounted within the camera.

    • Debubbling apparatus may have many uses, for example, in the manufacture of photographic materials where bubbles are to be removed from liquid photographic emulsion prior to application of such emulsion to a supporting substrate, in the food processing industries or in confectionery manufacture where air bubbles are undesirable because they may harbour germs, or in blood transfusion apparatus where air bubbles present a potentially lethal hazard. Described herein is a debubbling apparatus which comprises a vessel (10) having an outlet (18) and an inlet (16) spaced from one another longitudinally of the vessel, means for imparting rotational movement, about a longitudinal axis of the vessels to liquid passed through said vessel from said inlet to said outlet, and means (19) for transmitting a beam of ultrasound along the axis of said vessel in the direction towards said inlet, from a location closer to said outlet than to said inlet.

    • An ink composition is disclosed which has the property of a large reduction of surface tension with increasing temperature, and also has a high colorant loading. Water-soluble dyes, oil soluble dyes, water miscible pigments, and oil miscible pigments can be incorporated in various combinations in the same ink composition. Incorporating pigments in the oil component of the microemulsion can increase the colorant loading without substantially increasing the viscosity of the ink. Low viscosity is important for printers based on LIFT printing principles, as print speed improves with low viscosity. Pigment or dyes can be simultaneously incorporated in the water component of the microemulsion.

    • A method of transferring a scene recorded on photographic negative film to video using a telecine is disclosed comprising the steps of: a) setting up the telecine so that predetermined waveform readings are obtained for a reference element comprising at least one gray scale portion comprising density patches corresponding to three known density values; b) storing the telecine set-up settings; c) loading a scene on photographic negative film into the telecine wherein the scene includes a gray card; d) using the stored telecine settings to effect transfer of the scene to video; e) determining red, green and blue video voltages for the gray card; and f) converting the red, green and blue video voltages to Transfer Points between 0 and 50 to provide exposure information for the scene. The reference element preferably comprises density patches which correspond to densities obtained in a color negative film after correctly exposing the film to a target comprising a 3 % reflectance black, an 18 % reflectance gray and a 90 % reflectance white region, and standard photographic processing. Advantageously, the gray scale portion fills a full frame on the element. In a preferred embodiment of the reference element, the gray scale portion is horizontally arranged thereon. The red, green and blue video voltages are converted to Transfer Points between 0 and 50 to provide exposure information analogously to Printer Light values obtained for dailies or test print films.

    • Inks with a large reduction in surface tension at the required operating temperature for drop selection can be prepared as a sol of small particles of a surfactant which melts in the desired operating temperature range. Examples of such surfactants include carboxylic acids with between 14 and 30 carbon atoms, such as eicosanoic acid, CH3(CH2)18COOH, m.p. 77 DEG C (common name: arachidic acid). As the melting point of sols with a small particle size is usually slightly less than of the bulk material, it is preferable to choose a carboxylic acid with a melting point slightly above the desired drop selection temperature. A mixture of carboxylic acids with slightly varying chain lengths can be used to spread the melting points over a range of temperatures. Such mixtures will typically cost less than the pure acid.

    • A composite sheet and a method for printing differently-transformed images using a composite sheet. In the method, a composite sheet is provided that has first and second portions. The first portion defining a primary receiver having a first set of receiver spectral characteristics. A secondary receiver is selected. The secondary receiver defines a second set of receiver spectral characteristics. A set of colorants is selected. The colorants define a first set of colorant spectral characteristics for printing the first receiver and a second set of colorant spectral characteristics for printing the second receiver. The first sets of spectral characteristics, taken together, have one or more differences from the second sets of spectral characteristics. Digitized first and second images are provided. The digitized first image is normalized relative to the first sets of spectral characteristics to provide a normalized-digitized first image. The digitized second image is normalized relative to the second sets of spectral characteristics to provide a normalized-digitized second image. After the normalizing steps, the colorants are deposited on the portions of the composite sheet. The depositing on the first portion is modulated by the normalized-digitized first image to create a first colorant image. The depositing on the second portion is modulated by the normalized-digitized second image to create a second colorant image.
