    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a ballast for shortening time duration till reaching to a nominal optical output without damaging a lamp. The power modulation is advantageously carried out at an acoustic resonance frequency of the lamp, such as the first azimuth resonance mode of the lamp. The power modulation may carry out sweeping of a sine wave ripple on a peak of an input voltage waveform, and a frequency range of the sine wave ripple includes an acoustic resonance frequency.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an HID lamp reigniting quickly without using extremely high voltage.
      SOLUTION: A first starting electrode includes a thermal machine member. In case the thermal machine member is in a low-temperature state, an inner side terminal part of the first starting electrode is located at a first position, and in case it is in a high-temperature state, the inner side terminal part of the first starting electrode is located at a second position. In the low-temperature state, an impedance which goes from an outer side terminal part of the first starting electrode to an inner side terminal part of a second starting electrode through the inner side terminal part of the first starting electrode, is lower than an impedance which goes from an outer side terminal part of a first main electrode to an inner side terminal part of a second main electrode through an inner side terminal part of the first main electrode. In the high-temperature state, an impedance which goes from the outer side terminal part of the first starting electrode to the inner side terminal part of the second starting electrode through the inner side terminal part of the first starting electrode, is higher than an impedance which goes from the outer side terminal part of the first main electrode to the inner side terminal part of the second main electrode through the inner side terminal part of the first main electrode.
