    • A tire (10) having a tread portion (12), a side wall (13) on each side of the tread portion (12), a casing (15) which supports the side walls (13) and the tread portion (12), the tire also having a circumferential restrictor (19) on the outside circumference of the casing (15). The circumferential restrictor (19) extends across at least a part of the distance between the side walls (13), and resists radial distortion of the tire (16). The amount or type of the material making up the circumferential restrictor varies across the width of the tire, thereby to vary the resistance to radial distortion of the tire. The circumferential restrictor (19) may be a cord of reinforcing material wrapped in a helical fashion around the outside circumference of the casing, and the variation in resistance to radial distortion may be provided by the spacing between the windings of the cord varying across the distance between the side walls. The resistance of radial deformation at the edges of the circumferential restrictor is between 30 % and 70 % of the resistance to radial deformation at the centre line between the side walls (13).
