Pressure applied to the ultrafiltration unit 12 is regulated with a pressure regulating valve 18 disposed in the return line 9 and a water-soluble salt solution contained in the reactant solution is separated by the ultrafiltration unit 12. The maximum concentration of an electrolyte salt in the formation of silver halide grains is controlled to =0.5 mol/l.

In this process, since water is also subjected to ultrafiltration, water in a required amt. is replenished through a water adding line 4. Any ultrafiltration pump 6 can be selected, and especially in order to obtain the finish liquid amt. of the emulsion by ultrafiltration, a pump which can control the liquid amt. is preferably used because the fluctuation of the liquid surface prevents the detection of the liquid level.

The betaine-type surfactant means a surfactant having a cationic part and an anion part in one molecule, and for example, carboxybetaine, sulfoxybetaine, and imidazolium-type surfactants can be used. The add amt. of the betaine-type surfactant is preferably 0.001 to 0.1, especially 0.01 to 0.08 dry weight ratio to 1.0 of gelatin used as a binder.
