    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect always accurately the end position of a detection object without being influenced by a color or irregularities of the surface of the detection object or by warp or sag of the end of the detection object. SOLUTION: When detecting the paper end by a printer, first of all, a form is conveyed onto a platen, and the emitted light quantity from a reflection type optical sensor is adjusted based on the reflected light quantity from the form (S110, S120). Then, the reflection type optical sensor is moved from one end to the other end of the platen when the form is removed from the platen and when the form is arranged on the platen respectively, and a sensor output D is sampled at each moving time, to thereby generate time series data of the output D2 in the existing state of the form and time series data of the output D1 in the absent state of the form (S130-S160). Then, each deviation ΔD of D2, D1 acquired on the sensor same position relative to each data is determined successively, and a point where the deviation ΔD crosses a determination value α is detected as the paper end (S170, S180).
