    • Methods and systems are provided for updating and recovering firmware within computers over a distributed network. While a computer is in an operating system independent state, a determination is made as to whether the firmware within the computer is valid. The firmware may be the BIOS for the computer. If it is determined that the current firmware is invalid, a recovery request is sent to a manager computer monitoring for recovery requests. The manager computer sends a new firmware image over the network to the computer. The invalid firmware is then updated with the new firmware image. An instruction to update the firmware of the computer may also be sent from a manager computer to computers monitoring for instructions. When the instruction is received, the computer transitions to an operating system independent recovery state, receives a new firmware image over the network, and updates with the new firmware image.

    • Methods and systems for implementing a network protocol stack and a web interface within a management module are provided. A network controller supports utilizing a plurality of media access control (MAC) addresses. The method involves configuring the network controller to allocate one of the MAC addresses to the management module where the management module is utilized in monitoring operations associated with the computer system. The network controller is programmed to send the management module, via the system interface, all network packets addressed to the MAC address allocated to the management module. The TCP/IP stack and the web interface are provided within the management module. Thus, when a network packet destined for the management module is received from a remote computer at the network controller, the network controller sends the network packet to the management module via the system interface thereby implementing a network protocol stack and web interface.

    • A method, system, apparatus, and computer-readable medium for sharing a dynamically located memory block between regular, SMM, and other components in an EFI environment are provided. According to the method, a block of memory is allocated from a volatile memory device, such as a main system random access memory. The memory block is allocated dynamically and has a dynamically assigned memory address. The memory address of the memory block is shared between a master component executing within an EFI environment and one or more slave components executing within the same and/or different processing modes, such as a system management mode. The memory address is used by the master component to access the memory block and also used by the slave components to access the memory block.

    • A method, apparatus, and computer-readable medium for utilizing devices compliant with the BIOS boot specification (“BBS”) from within an EFI environment are provided. According to one method, an option ROM initialization procedure is executed to obtain a boot connection vector for each BBS compliant device. The boot connection vector for each device is executed to obtain a pointer to program code within the option ROM for accessing each device. When a request is received from within an EFI environment to access a device, the appropriate pointer for accessing the device and an interrupt thunk are utilized to access the requested device from within the EFI environment. The post-initialization state of memory used by the option ROM may also be saved and restored prior to booting a legacy operating system from the EFI environment.
