    • A storage system configured to provide a storage area to a host coupled to the storage system includes a first storage device being configured to store data and provide one or more functions. A second storage device is configured to store data and provide one or more functions. A virtual volume provides a storage location and being associated with at least one of the first and second storage devices. A database includes information relating to the one or more functions that the first and second storage devices are configured to perform. A first server is coupled to the first and second storage devices and having access to the database and providing the virtual volume to the host, the first server being configured to access the database in response to a function request from the host involving at least one of the first and second storage devices. The function request is a request of a function to be performed by a storage device. The database is accessed to determine whether or not the at least one of the first and second storage devices is capable of performing the request from the host. The first server is further configured to perform the request if the determination is negative or provide an instruction to the at least one of the first and second storage devices to perform to the request if the determination is positive.

    • The storage system of the present invention has a simple configuration and ensures redundancy of the system. The primary storage control device and the first secondary storage control device are connected by a synchronous read method, and the primary storage control device and the second secondary storage control device are connected by an asynchronous read method. The primary storage control device sets a management number in the update data and saves a journal data. The primary storage control device associates the management number with the update data and transmits them to the first secondary storage control device. The first secondary storage control device writes the update data to the first secondary volume, associates the management number with the storage destination address of the update data and stores them in the maintenance table. If the primary storage control device stops, the first secondary storage control device becomes anew a primary storage control device. The first secondary storage control device is connected to the second secondary storage control device by an asynchronous read method.

    • In a computer system having a computer, a storage system having storage units being coupled to the computer and for storing user data used by the computer, and a backup device being coupled to the computer and the storage system, a backup method is presented for obtaining a backup of the data stored in the storage unit to the backup device. The storage system holds the user data dually in a first and a second storage units. In backing up the user data, a split instruction for releasing the duplex state of the first and the second storage units is sent from the computer to the storage unit. In response to the split instruction, the storage system interrupts the reflection of the update of the user data to the first storage unit onto the second storage unit. Then, a copy instruction for copying the user data held in the second storage unit to the backup device is sent from the computer to the storage system. The storage system operates to transfer the user data inside of the second storage unit to the backup device in response to the copy instruction.

    • A clustering storage system capable of operating a plurality of storage system units as a single storage system by connecting the storage system units with one another by means of data connection lines collects access information to the system. The access information is collected in a unit of combination of a logical port receiving an access command from a host computer and a logical volume constituting a unit for management of data. A combination of the logical port and the logical volume having a high frequency of data transfer between the storage system units are detected with reference to the collected access information and the logical port is remapped or the logical volume between the storage system units is remapped.
