    • Disclosed is a process for producing a multiple-layered sheet of film comprising at least two thermoplastic materials by coextrusion through a slot die, comprising the steps of heat plastifying a first, second, third and fourth thermoplastic material; joining a stream of the first heat plastified thermoplastic material and a stream of the second heat plastified thermoplastic material to form a first combined stream having a generally rectangular cross-section and having an upper layer of the first thermoplastic material and a lower layer of the second thermoplastic material mechnically anchored together by means of profiles formed on the contact surfaces of the two layers; joining a stream of the third heat plastified thermoplastic material and a stream of the fourth heat plastified thermoplastic material to form a similar second combined stream, reducing the width of the first and second combined stream; joining the first and second combined streams in edge-to-edge fashion in a single plane to form a composite stream; introducing the composite stream into the inlet channel of the slot die; coextruding the composite stream through the slot die to form a multiple layer film or sheet; and cooling the film or sheet. Also disclosed is an apparatus for carrying out this process.

    • The coextrusion device (20) of the present invention can be used with conventional extruders (24-26) and extrusion dies (90) for forming layered products (91) from at least two materials. It includes a manifold (21) for receiving a plurality of extruded feed materials (A, B, C) and a feedblock (22) receiving the feed materials from the manifold. The feedblock includes first and second faces (43, 52), entrance ports (40, 41, 42) in the first face corresponding to the number of feed materials, channel means (50, 60, 70) passing through the feedblock between the first and second faces directing each feed material into at least one separate profile, and exit ports (51, 61, 71) in the second face corresponding to the number of channel means, defining a first profile for each feed material. An adaptor (23) is provided for receiving the first profiles from the feedblock and includes first and second faces (82, 85), an entrance port (83) in the first face receiving said first profiles, an exit port (84) in the second face corresponding to the entrance of the extrusion die and, a transition zone (86) between the entrance and exit ports wherein the first profiles become contiguous and the overall configuration of the contiguous first profiles is adapted for receipt by the extrusion die. The device can further include a reverser plate (110) and alternate feedblocks (130 ) having different exit ports (139, 140, 152, 153). Lastly, a method is provided for reducing perturbation while coextruding, utilizing a device of the present invention.

    • A multilayer film is prepared by coextruding nylon with a chemically modified polyolefin which has functional groups added to the basic polymer to provide strong adhesion to the nylon after coextrusion. The multiple layer film combines the strength and protection properties of the nylon with desired properties in the modified polyolefin. Multiple layer films may be produced by coextruding nylon layers with multiple layers of the modified polyolefin, and with additional layers of nonmodified polyolefins and other polymers. Suitable commercially available modified polyolefins for use in the multilayer film include Plexar-1 and Plexar-3 described in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 616,035, and Plexar-2 described in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 616,374, both filed in September, 1975, now abandoned, and respective continuation-in-parts thereof Ser. No. 808,080, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,087,588, and Ser. No. 808,079, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,087,587.
