    • An impact detection apparatus (10) includes a device that utilizes multiple sensor elements (11) to determine whether or not a ball lands in or out on a tennis court (12). The sensor positions (13-134) are adjacent to the various boundary lines of the tennis court (12). The sensor elements (11) are layered devices which, when compressed, generate an electrical impulse. The impulse is then analyzed through various signal processing means so that an impact caused a sensor (11) to be compressed may be characterized as being a ball, a footstep, or some other object. In this way, near-simultaneous impacts of a ball and a footstep can be distinguished. If the impact is characterized as a ball that has landed out, a control console (206) will give a visual and/or audible signal so that players, and officials if present, are informed that the ball was out.

    • Infrasonic switch device to actuate an alarm in response to detection of infrasonic energy, including a multi-position switch circuit having a "standby" or "reset" position responsive to infrasonic signals, an infrasonic detection circuit to detect and pass selected levels of infrasonic energy, a trigger circuit to actuate an alarm such as a light or a buzzer for a predetermined time upon detection of the selected levels of infrasonic energy, and a timing circuit to permit actuation of the alarm for a predetermined time when the multi-position switch is in the "standby" or "reset" mode.     • Drift of the standing wave pattern in an acoustic doppler intrusion detection system in a confined space is compensated by adjusting the relative radiating and receiving positions of the radiator and receiver transducers, respectively, either mechanically or electrically until the signal level of the carrier wave at the receiver transducer is optimized. In the mechanical adjustment mode, either the receiver transducer or the radiating transducer is supported for movement relative to the other and is moved by a motor energized under the control of a signal level sensor circuit connected to the output of the receiver transducer. In another mode, a plurality of receiver (or alternatively radiator) transducers are connected through a switch to the signal level sensor circuit which in response to a drop in received signal level below a predetermined threshold, selectively switches the active transducer to optimize the received signal level. In still another mode, one of at least two radiator (or alternatively, receiver) transducers is connected through a variable phase shifter to the signal generator (or to the receiver circuit for the receiver transducer), the phase shifter being adjustable in response to the output of the signal level sensor to optimize the signal level at the receiver transducer. The invention comprehends the apparatus for and method of optimizing signal strength at the receiver transducer.

    • A vibration sensor device is mounted on a translucent ornamental disc so it can be mounted at any desired position on a window pane so as to achieve the greatest sensitivity without being asthetically offensive. A bracket affixed to the disc mounts a base to which electrical leads are attached to connect the sensor to an alarm control unit. A motion sensing switch is detachably connected to the base to allow easy substitution of switches of different sensitivities. A cover hides the bracket, base, and switch and the whole unit is adhesively attached to the window pane.

    • An ultrasonic alarm device has a detector for detecting a reflected ultrasonic wave in a watching area to obtain a Doppler signal due to motion of a person, a Schmitt circuit for converting the detection output into a pulse output and a waveform shaping circuit for shaping the pulse output into a pulse train having a certain pulse width. The output of the waveform shaping circuit is fed in parallel to two band-pass digital filters, one for the Doppler signal and the other for noise signals. Each of the filters comprises two monostable multivibrators connected in parallel and an AND gate having three inputs of which one is connected through an inverter to the output of one monostable multivibrator, a second is connected to the output of the second monostable multivibrator and the third to the input of the monostable multivibrators. The output of the Doppler signal filter is fed through a first integrator to a level decision circuit while the output of the noise signal circuit is fed through a second integrator to the first integrator. The level decision circuit is connected through a third integrator to an output circuit which produces an alarm signal when the signal level is above a predetermined value. Through this circuitry, the Doppler signal due to motion of a person is distinguished from external disturbances such as those due to wind, a telephone bell, an electric click or movement of a small animal, bird or insect.
