    • A system for quickly and reliably detecting a failed structure includes a signal source, a cable attached to the structure, an anti-slip cable anchor, a signal detector, and user indicator. When the structure fails, the cable attached to the structure is also broken. The user indicator is operable to display the status of the cable. The cable breaks due to exceeding the elastic modulus of the cable, caused by elongation of the distance between two fixed points caused by the failing structure. Electric power must be provided to each signal source, signal detector and user indicator.

    • The present invention is an earthquake detector and alarm system designed to detect even very low seismic vibration activity and warn the user. The present invention's detector sensor is selective to certain frequencies that are most probable in seismic activity and resistant to frequencies not typical in seismic activity, thus providing a high level of seismic activity detection and a low level of false triggers from non-seismic sources. It's purpose is to notify dwelling occupants that an earthquake is underway thus removing doubt that emergency action should be immediately taken. The clear, unmistakable warning provided by the present invention is valuable for sleeping occupants who might otherwise sleep through the initial activity in a seismic event, loosing valuable time to take emergency actions. The present invention is a capable piece of safety equipment which can give early seismic detection and warning, providing the opportunity for occupants to begin emergency action at the earliest possible moment.

    • A set of first and second detecting units detects an emergency. First and second pseudo-emergency generating units generate a pseudo-emergency for the first and second detecting units. A driving unit alternately drives the first and second pseudo-emergency generating units. An abnormality detecting unit detects operation of the first and second detecting units detecting the pseudo-emergency from the first and second pseudo-emergency generating units, the abnormality detecting units performing a predetermined indication when thus-detected operation is abnormal. An emergency detection outputting unit, in an emergency, outputs an emergency detection signal in response to reception of emergency detection signals from both the first and second detecting units.

    • This invention relates to an automatic, emergency or weather alert interface system between a first communication system, on which an emergency alert signaling tone is transmitted to indicate the occurrence of an emergence condition, and a second communication system, different from the first communication system. In operation, an emergency alert signaling tone is received from the first communication system by the emergency alert interface system which causes a prerecorded alert message to automatically be transmitted on the second communication system for an adjustable number of cycles wherein the audio from the prerecorded alert message is mixed with the audio from the second communication system so as to permit both audio messages to simultaneously be transmitted on the second communication system. Additional features taught herein include the transmission of a subaudible signaling tone on the second communication system to permit listeners on the second communication system to filter out all non emergency communication on that system until the subaudible signal is transmitted and the ability to permit a second communication system listener to access and link and the first communication system to the second communication system to permit immediate access to the alert message on the first communication system through the second communication system.

    • A method and apparatus for determining the position of a vessel in distress and transmitting an auditory distress message containing the position of the vessel. The apparatus obtains the position of the vessel as determined by a LORAN-C type receiver from either a cassette or directly from the LORAN-C receiver and generates a "Mayday" message including the identification of a vessel, the position of the vessel and the nature of the emergency. The "Mayday" message is synthesized into an auditory human or Morse code message. The language of the auditory message is preferably chosen to correspond with the most likely language used by a possible receiver of the "Mayday" message. Also preferably, the apparatus determines whether the primary distress radio frequency is clear; should the primary distress frequency be in use, the apparatus automatically shifts to a secondary frequency and transmits the "Mayday" message. During transmission on the secondary frequency the apparatus continues to monitor primary frequency; when the primary frequency clears, the "Mayday" message is transmitted thereon.

    • The present alarm has a pendulum-operated switch apparatus including a pair of closely spaced, flexible, steel strips extending down from an insulation housing. These strips carry closely spaced, confronting switch contacts below the housing. One of these strips carries a pendulum weight at its lower end. To adjust the sensitivity of the switch, the other strip is adjustable toward the weighted strip by a metering pin operated by an adjusting screw through a gear reduction. Conductive rods extend into the housing to provide electrical connections to the upper ends of the strips. Each rod has a non-circular enlargement engaging the outer face of the corresponding strip and an inner end which is deformed laterally outward against the inner face of the strip.
