    • A network interface device may include an I/O unit configured to receive data packets from a packet network. A processing unit may be in communication with the I/O unit and be configured to identify data packets including data representative of DTMF signals, convert the data in the data packets into analog DTMF tone signals, and determine if power of the analog DTMF tone signals is below a threshold value. A digital to analog converter may be in communication with the processing unit and be configured to generate the analog DTMF tone signals based on the data in the data packets. A DTMF amplifier may be in communication with the processing unit and the digital to analog converter, where the processing unit may cause the DTMF amplifier to amplify the power of the analog DTMF tone signals in response to determining that the power of the analog DTMF tone signals are below the threshold value.

    • A method and system for presenting additional information about a user are provided. The user may be a calling party or a called party. A request for information in addition to the information normally contained in the caller ID may be constructed and sent to a repository of additional information that returns the additional information. If the user is a calling party, the additional information may be presented on the called party's communication device. If the user is a called party, the additional information may be presented on the calling party's communication device. A system including the repository may receive the request. An authoring and editing component of the system may allow the user or others to edit the additional information about the user. The system may select and send the additional information based on a set of parameters in the request and the access type of the requestor.

    • An exemplary process includes storing telephone numbers in a telephone number database, identifying which telephone numbers in the telephone number database have digits that occur in an alphabetic pattern as defined by a reference list, and designating the telephone numbers with digits occurring in the alphabetic pattern as patterned telephone numbers. An exemplary process of identifying alphabetic patterns includes assigning at least one letter in an alphabet to a first digit, assigning at least one other letter in an alphabet to a second digit, accessing a telephone number database storing telephone numbers having a plurality of digits, identifying a letter combination created by at least two digits of at least one of the telephone numbers in the telephone number database, and determining whether the letter combination forms an alphabetic pattern as defined by a reference list.

    • A user accesses a destination such as a call center. The call center generates a record for insertion into the user's personal address book, with a telephone number of the center and metadata concerning a transaction. To place a later call on the same matter, the user selects, either using his telephone or via a separate terminal, the address book entry and the call is made. The center receives the user's telephone number via the calling line identity (CLI) and translates this into a data address so that it can “pull” the metadata from the personal address book. Alternatively the server can translate the center's telephone number into a data address to “push” the metadata to the center.

    • A system and method for minimizing unsolicited marketing communications to subscribers in a subscription base obtains a contacting party identification for incoming communications to a selected contact point before communications are allowed to pass through to selected contact points. Next, contacting party identification is compared with a marketing database to determine if there is a match. If there is a match, a preselected action other than completing the incoming communication is taken or incoming communication is completed if an override condition is set. If there is no match, incoming communication is passed through and the subscriber can designate it as an unwanted marketing communication if a preselected criterion for addition is met once more than one subscriber identifies the contacting party identification as a potential marketing communication. The entries in the marketing database can be periodically deleted over time and then readded to the marketing database once the preselected criterion for addition has been met so as to refresh the database and keep it from becoming stale. A subscriber can access a customized subscriber database to selectively vary one or more override conditions.
