    • In a time division, multiple access system, a base station (102) transmits an isochronous beacon (404, 422) at the start of each frame (400), conveying control and timing information. Following the isochronous beacon (404), isochronous time slots (414, 416, 418, 420) are dynamically allocated for communication of isochronous data. After communication of the isochronous data, the remainder of the frame (400) before the next isochronous beacon (422) is used for transmission of packets of asynchronous data. This technique gives priority to the isochronous data, which is real time, while also maximizing the bandwidth allocated for asynchronous data. A single transmitter circuit (124, 158) and receiver circuit (122, 156) at each station are used for communication of both isochronous data and asynchronous data.

    • A communication device (508) for use in a Time Division Multiplex (TDM) communication system (500) includes a transmitter, a receiver, and a frequency scanner for quickly scanning the radio frequency communication channels to determine an available channel. The communication device (508) also includes a phase locked loop (100) for providing a reference signal for the communication device (508) and locking to the available channel. This phase locked loop (100) includes a Voltage Control Oscillator (VCO) (104) having a control signal input (103). The phase locked loop (100) also includes a first filter (110) and a second filter (108). The first filter (110) has a wide frequency response. The second filter (108) includes a storage element (222) and has a narrow frequency response. The phase locked loop (100) also includes a switching circuit (106) which determines which one of the two filters (110, 108) gets coupled to the voltage control oscillator (104).

    • An alphanumeric entry system which is provided with an electronic lock-out feature. The keypad entry system of the present invention comprises an alphanumeric keypad having function keys and display, a microprocessor, and an electronically programmable read-only memory device. The display consists of a series of system related menus as well as an alphanumeric display area. One of the system related menus corresponds to a locking feature, which may be activated by a general purpose function key. In the locking mode, the radio keypad toggles between a locked and unlocked condition as controlled by the function keys in accordance with a predefined sequence. The alphanumeric entry system of the present invention is particularly advantageous for use with portable two-way communications equipment which operate in a plurality of radio systems.
