    • A device for monitoring the tension on a thread comprises a frame for retaining the thread; a leaf spring on the frame for bearing against the thread and being displaced thereby as a function of such tension; a generator, such as a permanent magnet on the leaf spring, for generating an electromagnetic field between the frame and the leaf spring which varies as a function of such displacement; a Hall effect sensor which senses such field and generates an output signal indicative of such tension; and an electronic system for receiving said output signal and indicating whether said output signal and thereby said thread tension is within a predetermined desirable range. The indication is made at least at a location in the vicinity of the frame where it can be seen by persons who are responsible for maintaining the correct thread tension, and may comprise a plurality of LEDs for indicating respectively when the thread tension is too high, too low, and at the correct level. A method and device are also disclosed wherein the AC component of the sensor output is detected, and compared against an upper limit voltage and a lower limit voltage to determine whether the AC component above the upper limit voltage or below the lower limit voltage, and a respective LED is lit to indicate whether the AC component and the thread tension is too low, too high, or within the desirable range.

    • A web tension transducer device which is easily in-installed, has a high natural frequency, excellent linearity, and extremely low hysteresis. A twin beam type transducer having strain gages at the flex points of the beams is coupled to the shaft supporting the moving web through a self-aligning anti-friction bearing, the strain gages being so located and electrically connected that effects of friction in the bearing due to bending of the shaft are automatically cancelled out in the circuitry in which the strain gages are connected. The self-aligning bearing coupling is arranged to permit relative axial displacement between the shaft and the twin beam transducer for accommodating comparatively large amounts of shaft expansion. The bearing also may have a bearing surface liner comprised of a low coefficient of friction thermoplastic resin material such as teflon fiber or teflon fiber-filled acetal resin fabric.

    • Device for measuring tension in web-type materials such as tape, cloth, paper, felt, plastic film and the like which are under tension load, the device including three substantially parallel elongated rods carrying rotatively mounted sleeves for engaging the surfaces of the web-type material, the center rod being a load feeler member extending from the deflection portion of a load deflection beam which incorporates means for measuring the beam deflection in terms of tension in the web-type material, the other two rods being reference members on respective sides of the feeler member and rigidly fixed to a reference plate which is adjustable in perpendicular relation to the plane of the web-type material to compensate for thickness of the web-type material whose tension is being measured. The rotatively mounted sleeves are tapered at the ends farthest from the load deflection beam to facilitate edgewise insertion onto the surfaces of the material for making the tension measurement. Edgewise insertion may also be facilitated by separation of the reference sleeves with respect to the feeler sleeve in perpendicular relation to the web-type material by adjustment of the reference plate.
