摘要： A storage device includes read circuitry having a read head having a detector that outputs signals representing data from a first track and an adjacent track. The read head is subject to off-track excursions during which the read head detects signals from both the first track and an adjacent track. Data on each track includes a preamble including a repeating pattern. The repeating pattern in any first track is orthogonal to the repeating pattern in any track adjacent to the first track. The read circuitry also includes respective Discrete Fourier Transform circuits to identify components in the signals corresponding to respective frequencies characteristic of the repeating pattern on the first track and the repeating pattern on the second track, and computation circuitry to determine from the components a ratio by which the read head is off-track. Corresponding methods are provided for operating such a storage device and for reading data.

摘要： A system includes a first sync mark detector circuit operable to apply a first sync mark detection algorithm to search a received media sector and overhead for a second sync mark after a failure to identify a first sync mark. A second sync mark detector circuit operable to apply a second sync mark detection algorithm to search the received media sector and overhead for the second sync mark. An anchor point identification circuit identifies an anchor point in the received media sector. A retry controller circuit causes a re-read of the received media sector and overhead when the first sync mark detector circuit fails to identify the first sync mark, and aligns the received media sector to yield an aligned media sector. A data processing circuit recovers an original user data set from the aligned media sector.

摘要： A three-dimensional magnetic recording media can consist of a single recording layer configured with three or more separate magnetization levels. A first magnetization level can be written to a selected region of said recording layer by applying a first write field to the grains of said region to form a “spin-up” magnetization in the grains of said region. A second magnetization level can be written by applying a second opposite write field to selected grains of said region to form a “spin-down” magnetization. At least a third intermediate magnetization level can be written by applying a weaker or alternating write field to grains of said region to form an intermediate magnetization comprising a mixture of spin-up and spin-down grains. By such method, said region may comprise a data bit capable of storing 3 or more units of information corresponding to the number of separate magnetization levels employed.

摘要： Method and apparatus for storing and retrieving user data from magnetic recording tracks in a data storage device. In some embodiments, a rotatable data recording medium has a circumferentially extending data track formed from spaced apart embedded servo wedges that extend radially across a recording surface of the medium to define intervening data wedges between each adjacent pair of the servo wedges. Each data wedge along the data track has only a single timing field at a beginning portion of the data wedge immediately adjacent a first servo wedge, followed by a plurality of data sectors that extend across the data wedge to an end portion of the data wedge immediately adjacent a second servo wedge. No inter-sector gaps are provided between the respective data sectors and no additional timing fields are provided between the first and second servo wedges.

A first hardware engine scans an input block of characters and uses a plurality of lists of nodes to produce back pointers to matching strings in the input block to compress the input block. Each node points to a character in the input block previously scanned and has an associated probability that a back pointer to a matching string that begins with the pointed-to character will be produced by the first hardware engine. A second hardware engine, for each list of nodes of the plurality of lists, sorts the list according to the probabilities of the nodes in the list so that higher probability nodes appear earlier in the list for use by the first hardware engine to search for matching strings during the scan of the input block of characters.

Example apparatus may include a read logic that reads the plurality of stored records from the data storage devices, and ignores read errors, and a repair logic that monitors the set of data storage devices, replaces or repairs failing data storage devices, generates replacement records, and stores the replacement records on a replacement data storage device.
